Recommend gaming PC upgrades?

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my 3-4+ year old computer to meet the demands of more modern games at higher specs. Currently my computer holds well but does struggle with higher end games. Unfortunately while I can put a computer together, I know little about what is good and review sites can give vastly different answers. I prefer games such as the Total War series which have a lot happening on the screen at once, so anything that can help me play these smoother. I'd be looking at spending £500 to upgrade, but for the right stuff I'm happy to splash out more. The only changes I've made in the last couple years is a newer graphics card and adding an SSD.
