As per question.
-will be used for gaming and watching movies...not listening to music much.
-don't care about noise leakage
-don't care about mic, as I don't play online at the minute
-don't want a 5.1 set..had medusas before and they were not so good
-used with x-fi, plugged in through front port on pc

Was wondering should I go for a pair of Senh PC161's or splash on a set of HD515's or possibly better. Worried the latter would require good amplication.

Thanks.

HD515's aren't very good at all. Not worth considering.

At this price range I recommend: Denon D1000, Sennheiser HD595 or Audio Technica AD700.

Thanks,
Can you get away with powering these off your PC, or would I need to invest in a headphone amp.

The ones I listed will be fine unamped, but they all respond nicely to a good amp. The Denon's are more source dependant than the other two but your X-Fi should make a fine source.

For gaming, I'd probably get the A700s over the AD700s. From what I've heard, both are fine without an amplifier. You might also want to consider the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros (80 ohm); that's what I use. A lot of people say you really need an amplifier to get their full potential, but i noticed very little difference after getting my Corda Move.

Sennheiser HD595's. Can't fault them one bit.

I do a lot of online gaming (mainly cs), listen to a lot of music and watch movies/tv. They're fantastic all-rounders and they're very comfortable!

Spot on, though if you can stretch for another £10 you can get a pair of Audio Technica ATH A-900's from the far east (google for it).

Thanks for all the great advice lads.

What's the ohm rating on the 595's.
Local audio shop has them on sale.
Sales guy told me 32 or 64ohm is generally ok without amplification.

Actually have decided on the Audio Technica ATH-A900. Lots of reviews I have read say they are the best unamplified phones. 40 ohm also, brilliant bass, very comfortable etc.. Now where to find them.

You'll struggle to find them in the UK within your budget; they usually go for around £180 (as far as i can remember) around here. You'll likely have to import them from abroad, and possibly risk import duties etc.

Just got them from a Japanese shop on a popular auction site.
With shipping and they way the exhange rate is, they came to just under 101 sterling.
3-4 day delivery which is how long it takes OcUk to get anything over to Ireland.
Never been screwed on import duty with FedEx from Japan yet.

Sounds good! I hope you enjoy them, and be sure to tell us how they are when they arrive. :p
