Hi Guys,

I know you get a lot of this but, I just want your expert opinion on something as i am not as up to date with screens and things as its been about 5 years since i last bought one.

I have a budget of about £260 (give or take) and would like a 22inch Widescreen. It must have DVI. I'll be using it for Movies, Internet Browsing and Games, so colour rendering and picture quality are important.

Out of these, which would you say is the best?

(Please suggest alternatives if you think you know of a good screen at the moment)

- Asus MW221U 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor £263

- Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor £264

- Fujitsu Siemens L22-3W 22" Widesscreen LCD Monitor £212

Personally i am leaning towards the Fujitsu cause of the price but the build quality isn't great and i would like it to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It does have a nice thin bezel however. The ASUS's build quality is better but heard the colouring tilts towards blues and has ghosting (don't get mad at me if you own one pls)

Thanks a lot for any help!

I would steer clear of the asus untill the ghosting issue in this thread is resolved:

I would hold fire on a 226BW as people don't know when they are going to be in stock. If you waited till the beginning of next month you would probably find some reviews. It looks like a brilliantly good screen, but there is supposedly an issue where samsung has switched out the panel people have already given glowing reviews for a lesser quality one which people have yet to test out and review.

I will be reviewing this monitor on or after the 28th assuming I get a good one lol...otherwise I will be returning it.

Big thread here:

As for the fujitsu I'm afraid I do't know anything about it.

Does it have to be a 22"? The 20.1" Dell 2007WFP kicks the living crap out of those panels in terms of quality, and handles games well.

*EDIT*

Just re-read your original post and I see that you specify DVI as a must.

The Belinea is VGA only so its the Dell then mate.

Its worthy of note that the Dell has native HDCP support through the DVI which the Belinea Doesn't and the Dell also has a 4 Year On Site Warranty.

99.999999% of all other TFTs (Regardless of brand) only have 3 years.

Thanks for the suggestions.

In reply to richdog - yeah i think it has to be 22" as i want the biggest screen possible for the money, although i appreciate 20" can be better quality as they have the same amount of pixels as a 22" (i think thats correct?).

That 22" Del looks nice, i will now have to read up on what HDCP support is as that sounds very interesting indeed!

BTW does anyone have a Samsung SyncMaster 225BW 22" widescreen?

I've just seen one online and its a bit more expensive but being a samsung must be good right?

Well if you want to sacrifice a hell of a lot of image quality (Yes, TN panels really are that bad in that respect) for the sake of an unecessary 2" extra then that's up to you, but just don't come back with any complaints when you receive your 22" and you're sitting there thinking "It may be big, but ugh, the colours are washed out and the blacks are cack". :D

Have you actually seen this screen up and running then? Its now moved into my number one spot, due to HDCP and the 4yr onsite thing...

However, i have heard issues of noticeable backlight bleeding, can anyone confirm this?

Also, Is it an 'Ultrasharp' and if not what does this mean, lesser picture quality?

Cheers

Only a 6bit screen and 16.2 million colours - not good enough for the photo editing I want to do on it...

Hi - seen it up and running on the tech bench with an 8800GTS 320Mb running 3DMark 06, Ghost Recon AW and F.E.A.R.

Looks sweet as a nut to me.

Its not an ultra sharp (ultra sharp version I believe has a different panel & coating but 16ms only.)

Finally, some reassurance:

I'm running the exact same 20" version of the Dell as I type this very post
(http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-012-DE&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=)

and I use it for games, video, microsoft office, paint shop pro and photoshop.

All i can say is i think its an absolutely fantastic all rounder for £200 BUT!!!!!!!!!............

If you are SERIOUSLY into professional photoshop work to such an extent that you feel you'll find the panel not upto scratch, then it's worth saving up for a serious "graphic design level" of panel because you'll probably be disappointed in every other panel at this price range.

One thing to bear in min (this isn't a dig ;) )..... your budget is what determines the quality. For the money you are spending here, The Dell (HDCP support, 4 Year warranty) is about as good as it gets within this price bracket. The other panels mentioned here are also brilliant for the money but the Dell won't be that much better or worse than any of them. This is when the extra features and warranty become important.

I've stated this on other threads but incase you're unaware, all Dell's flat panel monitors use Samsung panels :)

Hope this helps

If you can hold on for a week or so then I can give a review on the Dell 22inch wide screen. Waiting on some Pentosin G11, Rad Screws, 775 Back plate, Fan controller which have all been ordered for my watercooling setup.

Cheers for the help guys - really first class info you've supplied me with there.

One last crazy question as i have been toying with the idea - will a nVidia 6800 GT (APG) do a Dell 24" 2407WFP justice?

Wont be using it for games much as i dont get the time anymore but want to know if it will be able to support such a hi res screen? (I don't plan on upgrading my rig anytime soon).

Might struggle with games at full resolution but if you're not gaming it will be fine at full res.

Yeah to be honest with my rig games aren't that hot anymore anyway, i dont want to upgrade as i'm waiting for a PS3 and cant keep up with PC gaming anymore. So basically my choice lies between the 22" Dell and the 24" Dell. There is a whopping difference in price but i wouldnt mind spending £550 if i got something amazing.

If i am just in windows and watching films then thats good to hear that my GFX card will handel it.

If i do play the odd game could i drop down the res to 1680 X 1050? or would that look pants?

Anyone seen this Daewoo?

Apparently they use Samsung panels?
