Recommend me a 26" LCD TV

This will be mainly for watching TV but it would also be used to hook up a PC or maybe console (Wii) as well. Best price I've seen is this one on **** for £250;

*Don't link to competitors!*

It looks okay. But I guess it would be better to stretch my budget a little further. So what can I get for under £300? I'm not fussed about the freeview thing although most LCD TV's seem to come with this now. Be good to have HD input but I don't think I'll be using this for anything just yet ........ will I? I know naff all about TV's these days. I'm out of touch, which is why I've come onto here to ask the experts :wink:

Ok you have 423 posts how come u have linked a competitor :o
Competitor? Nonsense! Overclockers is far superior to **** ;)

So the Samsung monitors are a good buy then? They look a bit exy though. Cheapest Samsung on Overclockers is £440. I was hoping to spend nearer to £300.

see the sony above then for £300 odd :)

I have seen the sammy R88 for £370 they are also good just the newer sammys have a greater contrast ratio among other things.

To be honest I'm a bit naive about TV's these days. I mean what's the deal with digital freeview? How do you get a signal? do you need a big old TV antenna on your roof? And with HD DVD players can you play standard DVD's on these? I don't have a clue these days about TV's! First time I've bought one since 1992!!

HD DVD is reverse compatible.

Freeview varies, in some places you can get perfect signal with the tiny stick antena that comes with USB freeview dongles, but here for instance it's a full size tv aerial and a signal booster to have any chance at all.

Cool. So my collection of Lost DVD's will still play on a new Blu Ray machine.

My area (Hornchurch, Essex) isn't usually the best for good TV signals. Looks like I might have to buy a decent antenna if I'm going to make use of the freeview & do away with Virgin media TV. I was hoping to be able to do away with my TV subscription in order to save money that would go on the new TV ...... and that Wii console I'm thinking of buying ;)

Any thoughts on the LG 26" LCD? (I think it's an LG26 LC55. Something like that)

I think I might go for that 26" LG LC55. I can get it from a local retailer for £349, which seems like a good price (no names mentioned in case the 'competitior' police insnare me again :rolleyes:). I found an in depth review that scored it at 85%. It was lacking in some areas but for the money the reviewer was basically saying it was an exceptional set (can't seem to fidn the review now).

EDIT:Here's the review I found online;

Found another short review of the LG LC55 in a 'What video & Hi-Def TV' magazine round up of 26" LCD TV's under £400. It got 4/5 & a very good review. I'm pretty sold on this set now I think.

go with what ever u think looks best, u can get a decent 32" sony bravia as i posted above for £370 but if u would rather get an LG for £350 go for ya life :)

I've found another place that does the LG LC55 for £307. that looks like a bit of a bargain considering some retailers I've found on the net (no names mentioned) are doing it for well over £400!! I'm definitely warming to that LG for my first LCD TV.

It's the best 26" without a doubt but it costs..

The Panasonic Viera 26" TX26LXD70
Nice. But it's over £500. Bit out of my budget. Just reading some customer reviews on ..... another site :rolleyes: Lots of people are referencing the excellent image quality from standard inputs. The norm seems to be that these things are let down a bit by the SD capabilities & thus HD input is recommended to get the best out of them. Seems this set works a treat with SD input as well.

I was in Tesco's today looking at the TV's in there. Every set had the same thing playing. It was some sort of BBC HD demo or something. I thought it looked pretty poor on all of the LCD's (Not even as good as an old tube TV with PAL cable/sky running through it) Why was this? By comparison the plasma sets in there that were showing the exact same thing looked incredible.

I went out & bought the LG LC55 today. I need to buy an antenna so I can try out the digital freeview. Not sure what I need to get for that. One of those small indoor things. Or a bit mutha to go in the loft. At the moment I've just got it hooked up to my Virgin Media set top box. Picture is okay with this. Also in the house we have an old 26" Panasonic tube set also hooked up to Virgin Media. The picture is better on the old Panasonic tube set.

I saw plenty of LCD's, including the LG, in the shop being fed by a HD source. The picture was awesome. I'd really like to look into getting a HD TV source now. A one of Freeset payment is looking tempting over paying monthly for Virgin Media's cable. Be nice to get a Blu Ray player as well but I'll wait until these come down in price a bit first.
