Hi all,

My trusty 25" Nokia is starting to give up the ghost after 10 years of service, so I'm looking for a new telly.

I don't want to spend a lot, but at the same time I do want a decent picture - I don't like the artefacts I see on a lot of LCD TVs, which is my main bugbear.

I don't mind if it has VGA input or not. If there anything I should really be looking for though?

And is there any difference in different HDTV descriptions? I've read that "HDTV compatible" means nothing...

Any recommendations gratefully received :)

Cheers :)

Budget probably 850 max realistically....I popped out and saw a nice little model in a high street retailer, £850 for a Sharp LC32GD8e. The picture was fantastic, but it was running a DVD with an HDMi link...which might explain it.

Thanks for all the tips so far though, much appreciated!

I suppose I need SD performance more than HD - I don't actually have any HD devices!!!

Yeah, I saw that (thanks) but there are no reviews or recommendations (other than the fantastic prices!) which is what I'm looking for really.

I'm on NTL digital cable and I can see the artefacts on my CRT screen, so I could do without any further degradation in quality - sounds like the Tosh is the way forward!

Thanks chaps, much appreciated!

Thanks :)

One further question - I'm looking into working in Australia in a year or so's time. Would a UK LCD TV work OK over there? I know they're on the same standard (PAL) as us, but would it pick up broadcasts OK?

When looking at SD picture quality the panel actually has a lot less to do with it than the scaler.

All the top names have decent panels, but not all of them have decent scalers. I recently demo'd a few at a proper hifi store (currys etc. = lol) and the WLT66 and Sony Bravia ranges were far better than the samsungs when it came to SD picture quality, imo. Ended up with the 32WLT66, got it for £730 delivered, money well spent, fantastic set and very nice to look at.

Same here :) I went to the same "proper hi-fi store" ( :D ) and had a look. Same conclusion. About to order the same telly :)

Just thought I'd post my thoughts, having taken the advice of those on the forum and plumped for the Tosh.

Basically, I love it. Girlfriend loves it too - we're both really chuffed with the improvement over the 25" CRT. We had it sitting here in the lounge for a while before I took it to the tip, and it looked tiny :)

Picture quality is great, no horrific artefacts or blurring like I've seen on cheaper, earlier screens. It also makes a decent monitor, evidenced by the fact I've moved my games machine to the lounge and am using this to post right now :)

Thanks to all who recommended it - it's certainly been an excellent buy. It hasn't just replaced the 25" CRT set, but coupled with the 5.1 amp, speakers and sub it has not only completely transformed the fun we get out of watching films at home, it has also given us back a foot of space in the lounge! :)
