The Zalman is excellent. I have one in each pc. You have to use the power pass through as that is where it get's it's power from. All it is is an extra plug that plugs into the psu socket and then you plug the kettle lead into it. It had a lead going from that to a USB type plate that fit's in a vacant pci blanking slot and from there to the controller. It's easy to set up and has 4x temp probes too. I certainly would'nt be paying that price for one though. £8-10 less is about the right price.

If you put Temp Probes into a heat sink won't they (at least slightly) obstruct air flow and cause your system to heat more than it would otherwise?

Or u could be hardcore and get urself a bigng :D mind u doesnt fit in a 51/2 inch drive bay but instead automates ur fan controller (the software provided allows u to set the exact settings u want). e.g. setting all ur fans to run at 0% when idle and only speed up when the temp reaches a certain temp. Pretty much whatever u want to do the BIGNG can handle. hell im fitting a watercooling loop to it soon so that it can monitor that also. The best way to think of it is a temperature control system as its nowhere near as stupid as a fan controller but sadly twice as expensive (costs 50 quid but worth it in my oponion, my pc doesnt make barely any noise now unless i want it to).

But hey ive always preferred to have a automated system then just having my fans set at a certain temp. Also i do like the fact it turns my pc off it it gets too hot great feature if u overclock a lot :D

Yes temp probes will reduce the the surface area of the heatsink but only a minute amount as an analogue sensor probe or even a digital are very small. Analogue sensor probes are normally only just bigger than ur finger nail. Depends on the heatsink and where u place it. I have a artic cooling 64 pro and i have fitted it to the lowest part of the heatsink and hasnt really changed temps (because the heatsink is designed to remove heat from the bottom plate with heatpipes). So if u have a heatpipe cpu cooler try and place it on top of the plate that links the heatpipes to the rest of the heatsink (this will also provide u with the most accurate reading). Also this is also the best place to place the probe as u wont be wasting the heatsink area that is designed to cool the heatpipes down (the part that goes from the heat pipes to the rest of the metal).

thanks for the replies i like the sound of the zalman its just that i didnt want to be putting the extra power plug in just want it to turn the fans down and maybe monitor the temps but not really bothered about that the temps i mean but i think i will go for the Scythe Kaze, but then again if i just want it for adjusting the fans wouldnt this one do just fine

bought that one a while ago and its ace. really works well for just fan control. and looks good too!

Yea that zalman fan controller is fine if thats all u want (and that is just solely be able to change fan speeds and thats it). Friend has one of them and i have to say the quality of that fan controller is very good other than that any fan controller will do for ur needs then.
