So I was playing Borderlands 2 tonight, and after 1 hour (Just 1 hour!) My CPU temps were as follows;

core 1: 73
core 2: 75
core 3: 75
core 4: 73

I don't feel particularly comfortable with these temperatures to be perfectly honest, and as I am running a stock CPU fan, I gather I could spend some money to try and keep it a bit cooler? I have no idea what I should be looking for though in terms of fans! If you need to know, my CPU is a i5-2320 running at 3ghz.

Thanks guys :) Will try to reply to any questions within a reasonable time period, but will be a bit busy over next few days so apologys in advance :)

Yeah, I mean stock cooler :P Same thing though right? haha! Quick question mate, and I know how newbish it sounds...if I change the cooler, I will need to buy thermal paste right? I know it is probably a stupid question, but one I thought I would ask :)

You can buy thermal paste only if you feel it necessary and depending on the cooler you buy. Some coolers will come with good quality thermal paste while others will be poor quality.

One thing to mention is to make sure you clean the CPU properly when installing a new cooler. You can use lots of cleaning fluids but anything that is alcohol based works well (including nail varnish remover). You can also use one of the cleaning kits/fluids available such as the Arctic Silver kit (which I use. Does a good job) or Akasa cleaner.

A fan that I'd recommend due to it's size and the fact that it's on clearance (CHEAP) is this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x **B Grade** Thermalright HR-02 Macho CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1155/LGA1366) £21
Total : £21.00 (includes shipping : FREE).

Should do a good job. Although I would drop OcUK a message asking them what parts are missing as you don't want one turning up without the 1155 mounting brackets. B grade products can sometimes have parts missing which is why you should ask beforehand.

Yes you will need to wipe of the residue on the processor. And not just a little wipe either, you should get all of it off. Keep wiping it with a damp paper towel until the towel comes off clean. When cleaning it you may notice the processor looks clean but if you keep wiping it you will continue to get thermal compound residue on the paper towel.

Also make sure to not muck the installation up! Make sure to read through the instructions carefully so you don't mess up and have to take the heatsink off. Because the thermal paste is pre-applied I doubt the cooler will come with a tube of thermal paste. This means you have once chance to get it right otherwise when you take the cooler off to correct something air bubbles will form in the thermal paste reducing its performance.

You realise you most likely will need to take the motherboard out the case to get the new mounting bracket in place?
Are you up for that john sherry? :-)

Just fitted the Freezer 7, whoa, it makes no audible noise that I can hear! Will check later what temps are under stress.

Thanks for all the help guys :)

Welp, lol, it seems to have made it worse somehow. After 20minutes of borderlands 2, my temps were as follows;

Core 1:88oC
Core 2:90oC
Core 3:91oC
Core 4:86oC

Not quite sure why it is getting so high to be perfectly honest.

too much paste mayb. i use the grain of rice method. a small amount of paste the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the cpu. when u fit the heatsink it will spread the paste hopefully leaving no air bubbles and nice low temps

The paste comes preapplied on the cooler, so I assume they will use what would be the recommended amount? not sure, I am no pro at this cooling business lol

Is there enough pressure on the cpu?
Meaning is the cooler easy to move after installation
Max out the fan speed
But even on silent it should be sufficient
It should not reach 90 degrees
read the fan speed in bios

I am such a freaking eejit. I know what I have done wrong. I have used the amd brackets aswell so it has probably created a pocket of air between parts of the CPU and heatsink. I am such a bloody eejit! New thermal paste ordered :(

Just a note, Although the freezer is much better than a stock fan at getting the heat off the CPU they both move it to the same place, the case. If your case fan are not able to get it out of the case properly the heat in the case will just rise and rise to the point that the cooler will once again be saturated.

And on a second note, I hope you don't think I'm being insulting when I state the obvious here, but when you re-install the freezer, remember that the fan blows air through the heatsink not off it, a number of people make this mistake and have to refit it.

I understand Ubersonic, refitted it yesterday but didn't get around to playing much games, however after 1 hour of Rift, my readings were

Core 1: 78
Core 2: 82
Core 3: 83
Core 4: 80

The way I have the freezer is

Case Exhaust Fan <------- Cpu Fan --->

Edit: If it is any help, my case is a Coolermaster Elite 335U

Tried to get into BIOs to see if there was a problem in there, but it will only pull up "Advanced Windows Settings" Ugh. This was a bad idea haha!
