recommend me a game!

Have a look round Boardgamegeek, watch Tabletop and go to local gaming shops (tend to be independent these days) to get an idea of whats out there.

Hundreds of options.

If you want something fantasy based and a bit like Risk, you have several choices.

1) Kemet. 2-5 players, highly aggressive, almost no random elements.

2) Game of Thrones (2nd edition). Only really works with 5-6 players. It's basically Diplomacy with a random Reinforcement phase.

3) War of the Ring (2nd edition). Flat two player game. Probably the most similar to Risk.

4) Risk: Legacy. Best with 5 players. Not fantasy based, but it's Risk with a twist - the game is meant to be played as a multi-game campaign, and with each game the board becomes increasingly unique. Some components will not be used; others are meant to be destroyed.

Modern great games: Caylus, Dominion, Twilight Struggle, Eclipse, Troyes, Orleans, Belfort, Tzolk'in.

Lords of Waterdeep is an awesome game. It's currently in our board game rotation :D.

We're also playing these, which may take your fancy:

  • Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) - 2 to 5 players - Fantasy
  • Abyss - 2 to 4 players - Strategy
  • Mice & Mystics - 2 to 4 players - Fantasy
  • Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game - 2 to 5 - Doesn't quite fit your call outs but it is a great game.
  • Pandemic - 2 to 4 (5 if you get one of the expansions) - Strategy
  • Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Skull & Shackles – 1 to 4 players - Fantasy

Similar to Risk, Diplomacy might be a good choice. I've not played it myself but I know friends who have.

Other games that you might like:
  • Settlers of Catan
  • Small World
  • Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride is kind of like Risk in that you have secret missions to complete but it is all based around building railways rather than moving armies.

I have played the Europe Edition and like it a lot. I also have the Swiss edition which is supposed to be good for two player but have not played it yet.

Small World is worth a go too, lots of replayability due to the random race/power combinations.

Small World takes way too long. The game space is better filled now by Tiny Epic Kingdoms if you want something fast and light, or Terra Mystica if you want something big and meaty.

Agreed, I find Tiny Epic Kingdoms quite deep for it's time length once you've played it a few times and Terra Mystica a much better game for a similar amount of time.

What about Dungeons and Dragons?

RPGs are an entirely different kind of game. They require a lot more work and involvement from everyone, especially the cat herder GM. If you want something along those lines but with the boardgame feel, there are three D&D boardgames that you could try. Wrath of Ashardalon is the weakest, I'm told, but they're all roughly similar.

How are you finding Abyss? It looks really interesting but I can't quite convince myself to pull the trigger on it.

We've only played a couple of times since we have so many games in the rotation at the moment. The first one was in the last hour of a 13hr board game day & at that point I just started picking Lords based on how awesome the artwork looked :p. The second time we played we were all awake & it was a super close game. I'd say if you have a local games store see if they have a copy you can play/rent & play.
