Recommend me a keyboard

Hi all.

I currently use an Alu Apple Keyboard (wired). I've found its not the best for typing on for long periods, so I'd like something more comfortable. Also, it limits the number of simultaneous key-presses, which is annoying for games ;)

Can anyone recommend me a new Mac keyboard? I'm happy to go wireless (NOT bluetooth though) and I'm not interested in the Logitech S530 combo. I quite liked the look of the Logitech DiNovo Mac, except the function keys and F[1-13] keys are shared. Ideally I'd like separate ones.

Arg, I'm trapped :( Will I have to buy a PC keyboard?

Why not see if you can pick up one of the older style white 'wedge' keyboards second-hand? I couldn't get on with the new aluminium one so I'm using the older style and loving every second of it.

Any particular reason you don't want a Bluetooth wireless keyboard?

Oh, you want to use an Apple keyboard on Windows? Sorry, can't help you there I'm afraid - the only PC I've got access to is miles away from the nearest Apple keyboard.

Out of interest, just how many buttons do you need to press at the same time?

More than 4, I even think the current limit on the apple keyboard is 3

p.s; the problem applies in both OS X and Windows. I just happen to use bootcamp for gaming :)

I'm pretty sure it's four - there's definitely a couple of shortcuts I use that require me to have the dexterity of an virtuoso.

In that case, maybe the keyboard is letting you down. What with all the games on Windows I'd have thought it must be capable of registering more than four concurrent key-presses.

You can absolutely use four keys simultaneously on all Mac keyboards, lots of Quark shortcuts are CMD & Alt & Shift & whatever. Loads of four key shortcuts in it. Adobe stuff too.

By sheer co-incidence I happen to have my white 'wedge' Apple keyboard sitting on my desk, having dragged it out of the loft to test something. I've just run it against that keyscan software and I get similar (but not identical) results as my Windows Logitech Ultra X...

...the result is that it really depends on the combination of keypresses. The controller on the kb must be 'zoned' in some way. For example on the Apple wedge I can press QWERTY or ASDFGH simultaneously (6 keys). I can even press ASDRTY at the same time. But I can't press WASD simultaneously (ASD is fine but W doesn't register).

Unfortunately I don't have a new style wired Apple kb to test.

I'm guessing this is for an FPS so I'm hazarding a guess you're having trouble with WAD Space... if so then this combination works fine on the wedge using keyscan.

Thank you VERY much for testing that. I guess it would be due to the grid/mapping of the membrane and switches?

Yes, I'm having problems around QWEASD + shift, control or space. It looks like the keyboard has a maximum of 5 key presses - but again the mapping around the WASD area is troublesome.

Looks pretty clear to me that I need to get a new keyboard now.

I've been using an aluminium apple keyboard for daily gaming/general use on a windows machine and I can confirm that there asre 100% no issues with not being able to press multiple keys at the same time. I really am not sure why this is hapening to you!
