I'm visiting London with my girlfriend in August and looking for a lively area to stay in. Not bothered about nightclubs but bars, cafe's and nice places to eat.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

How much are you looking to spend? that could make the difference between Hotel Sophia and The Dorchester.

EDIT: Though I guess not so pertinent for a general area recommendation.

From a quick look, Travelodge Covent Garden can be had for as little as £35/night in August and is bang in the middle of London with lots of good bars/restaurants/cafes around. I can't believe its so cheap actually! Must be due to a shortage of demand from tourists.

Shoreditch is another spot worth looking at which meets your criteria. Fulham as well. Both not so central but nice areas. Richmond as well is very nice but further out still. London is a huge place so there's loads of options - it'll also depend where your sister is as that could be the difference between a 5 minute or hour long trip on the train to visit.

You should come to my hometown Welling.

our high street is great. We’ve got loads of cafes, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, papa johns, KFC, McD’s, loads of Indian and kebab houses, and two Wetherspoons. It’s great.

That's a cracking deal and a great area to use as a base.

Tourist? Stick to the Central line and find a hotel nearby.
Everywhere is walkable from Covent Garden. I love walking through London, one of my favourite walks is all the way along the south bank from tower bridge to Westminster bridge, over the river and up to Trafalgar Square and then Leicester Square.

Definitely one of my favourite areas - love wandering down past Somerset House, etc. and south bank like Feek mentioned.

Sounds like you are all sorted now but the key thing about London is it has excellent transport links, so the location you stay in isn't as important as in many cities. I used to say in London quite a bit and would find whatever was priced cheap and near a train station with a direct line to places I needed to go before/after.

I found just north of Hyde Park (Bayswater, Lancaster Gate, Queensway) to have load of reasonably priced hotels in a relatively nice area, although they are a bit hit and miss quality wise.

Shoreditch is very trendy but it's also wedged right on the cusp of Tower Hamlets and I don't know I'd want to be wandering around there drunk late at night (although saying that I used to stay in Whitechapel a lot as it was cheap and near the office!).

We used to stay in London often when going to Rugby matches, as above Soho is OK

London is very odd for nightlife, loads of pubs shut by 11ish and people don't seem to dress for a night out

If you have money though things can be very good
