I am looking to replace my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina display (15") and the newest model with its lack of ports makes it essentially useless for me and anyway, I'm a bit sick of macOS.

I use Visual Studio for my degree and I will be using it for the next three years at least, so I need something that can run that now and in the future.

I also do the occasional bit of video editing so I would like something that can do that too.

Screen needs to be as good as the one on my Mac. It also needs to be as fast (if not faster) and have a good trackpad and keyboard.

Good battery life also a must and it needs to be portable. A 13" is possible, it doesn't have to be 15" necessarily. I just need something that is portable but I can also be productive on it.

Budget isn't too important, I'd just like to see what people think.

Thanks guys! :)

Use bootcamp and stick Windows on it. You get the best of both then and as you have a Mac already it makes sense.

Dell XPS 13. or 15

Consider the Full HD version rather then the touch screen one. It has longer battery and a nice matte screen.

Windows is worse on a laptop though, you'll get sick of it quicker. Is it really necessary to upgrade your MBP?
Get the 2015 MBP and boot camp it. Its difficult to find a Windows laptop that will have a better touchpad, screen contrast ratio and keyboard.

Just picked up a DELL XPS 13 9360 for £1,000.

The screen had a mark on it out of the box, it has coil whine and terrible backlight bleed ffs.

Going to buy a Macbook Pro tomorrow night for £300 more and bootcamp it.

Another vote for a 2015 MBP. If you are in development then you will be glad to have OSX as an option even if you use Bootcamp most of the time.

Good luck with USB-C on the new Macbooks, just about to sell mine and taken delivery of a Dell 7370 with all the bells and whistles.

I'm the same. Really tired of OSX. I've had my Pro Retina since 2012 and about to return to the dark side. Surface Pro 4 for me.

Doesn't meet your criteria I know - but I'm totally with you on the whole Mac thing. Windows seems exiting again.

Why not just boot camp Windows on your existing Mac? The hardware is excellent and it's taken the PC industry three years to get close to your existing MBP.

Given the choice of my work Lenovo ThinkPad workstation or my rMBP ... I'm taking the Mac every time. Better keyboard, better trackpad, better built.

The only exciting thing about Windows is the suspense of how broken your machine will be after patch tuesday...

I get student discount, the base model for new MBP is £1,300. The best price I could find for comparable spec of Dell XPS 13 was £989 and turns out, I would much rather pay the extra £300 for a better display, speakers and in my opinion keyboard. Also no coil whine and better build quality. Every case is different, so if somebody else decides ports are more important over everything else then that is up to them

Although I no longer own a MacBook or any laptop I honestly believe all things considered MacBooks are the best laptops available even if you only plan to use one for Windows

I've owned a few Macs and have a 2015 MBP for work, I also have two Microsoft Surface Books for me and the missus. I think the build quality on the Microsoft laptops is just as good as on the Macs and the screens are on par. I do prefer OSX integration with my iPhone but not enough to pay the price premium.
