do I go USB or 3.5mm ?
i have a Xonar Essence STX sound card

think my Logitech stopped working

no idea what to get , do i need to spend a lot or not really ?

I'm using a mod mic, with some Phillips X2s. It's pretty good, but uncomfortable after time with glasses on. Do you need a headset, or just a mic. Budget?

Rode smartLav+ (lavalier mic) is the mic I would switch to if it wasn't for the fact that I am always bare topped at home (I could literally hang it off my chest hair but it might be a bit heavy for comfort).
The thing about mics over headphones is you can hear via videos/recordings exactly how they will sound for you.

£10 is only going to get you rubbish.
I would say the Rode is a bargain for its price.

looking at both, i think the Rode smartlav+ would be awkward, id have nowhere really to attach it

the modmic looks like a good choice at the moment

Modmic is a good although not a cheap option. Certainly better quality microphone than the cheap offerings, so depends what kind of quality you need. If you'd prefer a desk microphone, the Samson Go, is decent. Still £30 odd though.

ill be wearing headphones if that makes any difference than having a desktop or a clip on next to mouth ?

I think a microphone such as the Modmic will do better in not picking up as much back ground noise as a desk one, but it might come down to preference also. Some people prefer a desk one and don't want an extra cable that clip on or attachable microphone brings.

"Headset style" mic being very close to mouth compared to background noise sources helps in that.
Further if it has unidirectional pattern that will further muffle noises coming from other directions.

Some desk microphone again needs some kind soft mounting or keyboard noises can travel to it even as vibrations through desk.

Modmic 5.. clips onto side of 599s can be moved up and down and out the way when not in use and also has mute switch.. brilliant quality too..

also when setup probably with voice activation even loud background noise doesn't get transmitted!

why the version 5 over the normal one ?

Do I need omni-directional or Uni-directional ?

Omni-directional capsule picks sounds from every direction with same sensitivity.
Uni-directional capsule is directional with sensitivity dropping in other directions and it's better for minimizing background noises like keyboard sounds making it better for communication purposes.

Instead of being different versions ModMic 5 has both capsules and switch for selecting between them alogn with "modular" mute switch for mic.

The V4 does everything you need, as it's just uni-directional. That's all you need, as wouldn't need omni-directional to pick up from different directions.

OcUK sells the Modmic, so best remove the links. :)

That's rather confusing. According to Antlion's site, the V4 has a uni-directional capsule and the V5 has both uni and omni.
