Hell!! \m/
Sorry if this should be in the HDD section. Anyway I was thinking of some NAS device with 2+ bays and get a 2-3TB drive for it. Basically it would store all our media.

I would like it to have an inbuilt torrent client as most do. I would like too USNET access.

Maybe store a folder for everyones music (to sync) and photos (that get backed up to the cloud)

Another idea is a Rasp PI, could use it as a NAS? and also USENET access.

Another thing is our router was FUBARed and I am using an old linksys router, I was thinking of upgrade or chain another router that supports n.

The D-Link ShareCenter Pulse 2-bay Network Storage Enclosure looks good.

or a DIY RPI

Be careful with dual bay NAS's. I found I ran out of space quickly and had to upgrade to a 4 bay ReadyNAS which has lasted me 6-7ish years.

I will be replacing mine soon and will go for a ReadyNAS NV+ v2

HP microserver is a good option with the current cashback but if not then a synology would have been my call for the above.

HP Microserver is out of my budget. Looking for summit to stash my media on and was thinking of getting them Android pen drives or "smart-like" boxes so I can access the media from any TV

Your not likely to get a NAS with 2+ bays and 3TB drive for under £250 id imagine.

Honestly are you saying 100 quid after cashback is out of your budget.... if you are you may as well give up now as you'll not get what you're after for anything less because that android 'nas' approach is not worth it and likely wouldn't work very well either

What is your budget?

HP Microserver can be had for £100ish after cashback.

Yeah I can stretch to £100 I never knew about the cashback. Or how it works. I guess one option is a server for NAS and I can use torrents/usenet. Should I hook it upto my router (old).

I will have 3 ethernets (100meg) and 54meg wifi (I think it's b/g not n). Or should/can I use the server as a ACCESS POINT and all the comps connect to it via ethernet (poss?) or wifi (get n and mad antennas)

Also I could use CCTV?? Either these cams

"Wireless IP camera Pan/Tilt 2-ways Audio Mobile Viewing WEP/WPA/WAP2 wireless Wi-Fi Pan/Tilt internet IP camera day and night vision CCTV security monitor built-in microphone and speaker allow you to communicate with people directly support mobile phone viewing"

From rainforest site.

Or buy proper CCTV but use the server as a PVR or them - by "proper cctv" I mean like:

Sorry to hijack the thread. But the HP micro server looks very interesting. I can't seem to find details on the cash back offer though. Is the offer still current? Thanks

Ok another site is doing it for £210 but it says £120 with Cash Back. £120 seems fine. What is the max hdd I can fit in? I will get a 2tb or 4tb for media and have the 250gb fr pics, music and stuff I have cloud or pen drive back up.

Thing is the router is downstairs - it's wireless n (was g just got a new one) and I plan on either keeping the server with it (headless) or up in my room. ATM our floor boards are up. Should I ask if I can get an ethernet ran upstairs to my room?

I plan on NAS and CCTV but maybe add a GFX card etc and use as a HTPC too.

Sounds FUN!
