I don't have much time for lots of gaming, however I have been having a quick half hour blast of UT3 for a long time now. I generally like FPS, mainly becuase of the zero learning curve lending itself to short stints...
Lately it seems that UT3's online community is waning, and is now populated by a relatively small community of extremely good / clan players, which for me usually results in an ass-whuppin and frustration! I must add that If I do happen upon a server populated by non-Godlike players, I do usually give a good account of myself...
So, to my question - is there a game that's similar but has a larger and more varied online population? A friend's son reckons UT2004 is still going strong, can anyone verify this?
I like the look of Deadspace and Left For Dead, would these be viable options?
Anything on the horizon?

Thanks! :D

Yes there are plenty playing ut 2004! Not on every game mode, but deathmatch, team deathmatch (with TAM mod), ctf, onslaught you can easily find a game.

I play onslaught a lot (its like warfare in ut3 without the orbs) and there about 5 servers that are regularly populated for this mode. Theyre custom map servers but in all honesty, playing ut 2004 without playing custom maps is like eating toast without butter, you miss out on so much fun.

Dead Space has no online MP, only the sequal does.

L4D's vs mode is quite long winded and games can take a couple of hours. There's also quite a steep learning curve to the special infected. The online co-op campaigns are good fun though.

Quake Live is free and might be worth you checking out, quite similar to UT.

Then theres the CoD (MW/MW2/BlOps)/BC2 style of "realistic military shooters" if that tickles your fancy.

CS:S is a classic, but again the guys that still play it are the dudes that have played it since release and it isn't the most newbie friendly game out there, if you can find a good server though it's great fun.

Team Fortress 2 is also another good'un, quite a bit different from the UT games as its class based team games but its still good, has a great scene and is pretty easy to drop into.

Can't really say anything for Dead Space, apart from I think it's a 3rd-person shooter? Is that what you want?

As for Left 4 Dead, it's lots of fun (as long as you get a good community on Steam to play with), but these days I'd recommend buying the sequel, L4D2 as there is more to it and it will include most of the same levels as of later this year anyway. :)

If your PC is pretty decent, I'd suggest Bad Company 2.
I bought it on the 11th and I must say, i'm hooked like I never was before.
I highly suggest you try it out!

Lots of replies, thanks very much all! L4D2 and Bad Company 2 sound likely candidates. I may have to dust off UT2K4 for a laugh as well, used to enjoy that more than UT3.
Just finished playing UT3, had one of those games where I seem to die after being tickled by a feather, and everyone else is invincible. A Russian server, I do wonder if there is skulduggery at work sometimes! ;)
