Recommend me a new graphics card

Hey all,

After my new Xmas PC (watercooled i7 920), the only thing holding me back now is my 3.5 year old 4870x2 :D it's been fine so far (no issues whatsoever) and it's served me well, but with Crysis 2 upcoming, and the massive amount of heat it's churning out into my case, and it the noise (deafening), just doesn't go well with my silent machine.

Anyway, I've been looking at the 560 GTX Ti's. Reading the latest issue of CustomPC (am I allowed to mention magazine names?), they say that the MSI 560GTX-Ti OC is an extremely good graphics card for it's price and is on pare with the GTX 570's when overclocked. Not to mention how cool and quiet it is, this seems like a very good choice for ~£200. However, I've just noticed the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560Ti OC and wonder how they compare? :S

Any other suggestions for my price range (preferably <£240) would be very welcome! With the money I have left over I'm planning on buying an SSD, too (load times are very slow as soon as I get to the desktop for about 2 minutes).

Thanks in advance all!
- Saul.

If you dp go for an nvidia card then get an EVGA so you dont vpid your warranty if you plan to liquid cool
Don't think I'll ever watercool again after my experience with watercooling ATM :p thanks for the suggestion though :) are 560Ti's good cards BTW?

I went from SLI GTX 275's to one GTX 275 (graphics cards don't like summer fruits squash) to an MSI GTX560. I was gunna get a 570 but I'm a bit skint and didn't wanna fork up the extra £80+.

I'm really impressed so far, good framerates in everything I've played so far, is silent and load temps for me have been a max of 56 degrees. half my problem with 2 GTX 275's was the temperature and noise, especially in the summer.

One issue might be the relatively low VRAM though, I wouldn't mind a bit more.

Maybe take a look at the MSI GTX 470? I reckon I probably would have got one instead if I hadn't already got my 560..

Hmmm that's weird. Well I'm looking in CustomPC (issue 91, page 38 if you've got it) and the benchmarks there in the top-left CLEARLY show the 560 Ti being far better than the 6870 :S either way the nVidia seems to have better overclocking capability so I'll probably buy that :) thanks for all the suggestions!

Also, I play BC2 a lot and the stock 560 Ti seems to outperform the ATi here:

Thanks :)

According to these benchmarks I'm looking at the 6950 is about 10fps (at least) in all games relative to the 560 Ti. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

CustomPC and Bittech are the same people BTW.

Look at the results for the GTX560TI SOC which runs at 1GHZ. According to Gigabyte they select the best chips for the GTX560TI SOC.

If you are getting a GTX560TI I would get the Gigabyte GTX560TI SOC. A few retailers have it for around £220 to £230 but it is not as common as other GTX560TI cards and sells out quickly too.

In the techreport review the stock GTX560 is slower than the HD6950 and slightly faster than an HD6870 1GB in BFBC2.

Also as stated earlier many of the reference HD6950 2GB cards can be unlocked to the same number of shaders as the HD6970 and can hit the same clockspeeds too. The only thing is that the RAM will run a bit slower.

BTW,the cheapest HD6870 is £166 on OcUK:

The cheapest GTX560TI 1GB on OcUK is around £198:

Considering the price difference I would expect the GTX560TI to be a faster card anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions again people!

I've just seen the Palit GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2GB? It's the same as the Palit one on OC except it has 2GB of VRAM... would this be better than the MSI? Unfortunately I can't find any reviews on the internet :/
