Currently with Newshosting and the speeds on weekends and certain times a day are hovering around 2-300k/sec especially on a weekend, i dont know if this is the case with all news group providers that you cant get full speed on weekends etc due to increased traffic. Can anyone recommend someone else? Currently on their $15 a month unlimited package and although 50% of the time i can get full speed on my 10meg connection its just not enough.

I get full speed all the time with my newshosting account...you sure its not your ISP being contended heavily during the weekend?

Impossible to tell really, thats what i need to find out i suppose.

Well when you suffer slow speeds from the newsgroups try doing a few speedtests and see what results you get from that. If theyre fine then it is newshosting but if they're also slow then its just your isp getting congested.

What ISP are you with? I'm assuming Virgin Media with your 10mb connection.

I am currently subscribed to both Newshosting and Powerusenet.

Like you my Newshosting speeds are dire at times, but Powerusenet almost always maxes out my connection and the package is the same (unlimited downloads, 75 days retention, $19.99 per month).

The speed thing could be location-related though.

I'm with Eclipse internet and they provide access to Giganews free of charge, albeit at 2x16kBs streams (although there are ways to multiply that through the use of static IPs). In short 220kBs unlimited for a total of 14.99/m including ISP costs.

Surely that isn't all legal uncopyrighted stuff you've been downloading? That's a silly amount to be downloading.

I guess you'll never know either way, so why say it?

I had the same problem with Newshosting recently and I found that changing the port number in my newsreader fixed it.

Newshosting use these ports: 119, 23, 25, 80, 3128, 7000, 8000 and 9000

Port 7000 is very fast for me and on my 10MB cable I download at 1.15MB/s

Giganews is the best providor with longest retention. Retention and completion is where its at - with over 100 days on binarys Giganews awesome ;) Combine it with Newsleechers SuperSearch feature and you got yerself a winning combo.

ive also found newshosting to be a bit up and down at the moment.......always used to max me at 1.4mb/s but now i get around 1mb or 900k....which is fair bit of difference when waiting for something:D

Might try another provider im not sure whether its just a short glitch there end or what

Giganews looks good buts its nearly twice the price.

Simply because its the best. I have never had any slow downs that was due to Giganews, we have a 100mb connection at work and I have got 5-6MB/sec off them before (thats mega BYTES a second).

If you want cheap and only 6 days retention you can try claranet:

Added bonus is that I am the Newsmaster there so you can moan at me if there are problems :p

Giganews and thundernews are the best imo :)
Good retention, fast and realibale.
Tryed 4-5 different companys over the years including newshosting etc and thier all pants compared.

Ok its a choice between Thundernews Unlimited 20$ a month (8 connections)OR Giganews Platinum 25$ a month (10 connections). Obviously i would rather the cheaper, not sure which one to go for....
