Recommend me a quiet GPU.

Im looking for something to improve upon the integrated HD4250 that is on my mobo. I use my pc mainly for media playback but also play a bit of CSS, and might start to play some more modern games (blackops?)

Anyone got any recommendations for a GPU that will perform this function for around £50, or preferably less.

Thanks

Owing to your budget I'd say your best bet would be to obtain something second hand, like a 4850 for example. Then you could purchase one of these coolers for it. Apart from being a very decent cooler, it should reduce noise significantly. Scroll down the page where there is a list of compatible cards.

Alternatively, if you prefer brand new (you might consider upping your budget just a little), you could consider one of these, though how quiet it is I don't really know for sure. If it's any use, HIS tend to make decent coolers.

This also caught my eye. It would be fine for CS:S, though I'm not sure how good it would be for Black Ops (even though it's quite a cpu dependent title). If you would care to mention what resolution you play at, it would give us more of an idea. :)

knew id forget something, i'd to play it at 1920x1080 (i cant even play css at this on my current gpu)

as for those recommendations they look good; do you think an actively cooled card is going to be a better idea than a passively cooled one (i've seen 5450's that are passively cooled but not sure if they are up to the job)

In that case due to the resolution I would probably go for a second hand card, such as those listed on the linked Akasa graphics cooler page. You could look in the members market here and see what there is amongst that selection, then buy a cooler like I've suggested. You would then get a quiet card that can game adequately well for that resolution, while staying roughly in budget. You never know, you may even find a passive card on sale anyway.

If you don't wish to do that then from what's available brand new here, I can't see you doing much better than one of the 5670's. It's £20 or so over you budget, though at least you wouldn't need to bother with installing a cooler. From what I've read a card like this will be fine fine for gaming at your resolution, providing you don't mind using medium settings, low AA (if at all). Of course, this will vary from title to title. However, how quiet they are I really can't say with any accuracy, though I think I have read about people using them in dual purpose HTPC come light to moderate gaming machines before.
