Budget of £100 but ideally I'd like to spend a lot less if possible.

Currently just get internet through Ethernet (im in Halls) but will have Virgin next year so need something that will support 50Mbps.

Requirements:
- Good wireless range, maybe the ability to add higher gain aerials to it would be nice.
- Wireless-n is a MUST.
- Gigabit Ethernet.
- Good LAN to WLAN transfer speed (and vice versa) (see uses below)

Uses:
- Mainly used so that my laptop can access my fileserver wirelessly which has all my music/videos/source disks on. Fileserver is connected to the router by Gigabit LAN and the laptop is connected via wireless.
- Would like it to have USB so I can plug in a printer and have that on the network.

What do you recommend?

I have been looking at the D-Link DIR-655 and it seems pretty good. Is there more than one version of this device though? Because prices range from £80-£120.

I would look at having a seperate router (Just turn off it's wireless if it has it) and wireless access point..

I keep looking out for the perfect all in one box, but even when one comes up, something is always a little compromised if you have exacting standards!..

i.e. running DD-WRT or Tomato or similar router firmware, but have the best N performance you can.

Do wireless access points give me better wireless performance than a router then? Because the decent ones seem to cost the same as routers.

Just noticed that the DIR 655 does have 5Ghz and I think that is something that will increase the speed of my network so I need that.

I have now been looking at the DIR 825. How does that compare?

Won't Virgin insist you use their 50meg router anyway? (Sorry if I'm mis-informed, but that's what I'd heard?)

I dont believe so, they give you the modem and router but it isnt like sky where they lock the router in.

I had 50mb and used my own router with virgin.

Now having a look at the Netgear WNDR3700 which looks OK from the outset. Very much over my budget but I would stretch if it's worth it.

Some websites show that it supports 300Mbps and some say 600Mbps, which is correct? (Or is there more than one version)

Anyone got any experience with this router? Does the router have any moving parts (fans or hard drives?)

EDIT: The only thing missing from this router is a printer server.

I've gone with the WNDR3700. Ordered today.

Thanks.

I've just ordered one today from OcUK (not for my home though).

Will be interested how you get on with it. The 1* review did kinda put me off it, but given the mrk's been fine with it I'd hope that dude just got a faulty unit. Though if our's are gonna be from the same batch...

Arrived today, but haven't had a chance to try it yet..

I got mine a few days ago aswell. Anyone got any guides that can help with setting it up.

Currently I am sitting in a room where I get 3 or 4/5 bars of wireless-g signal but no wireless-n signal? I thought wireless-n was supposed to support greater distances?

I can get wireless-n signal when I am in the same room as the router.
