Hey there,

So I am going to be getting a massively bigger desk soon and I have been looking at 49" monitors for a while now and am a little confused which one might suit my needs.

Here is some info on what I will be playing etc:

Star Citizen
Battlefield
Construction games like Satisfactory
Work (Graphic work and training creation)

I have an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and I am not sure if this will handle these kind of monitors?

So I have seen the Samsung G9/Neo but also seen bad reviews about them. I like the Dell 49" monitor but it only has a 60Hz refresh rate! So what monitors would you recommend I look into getting?

A 5700XT will really struggle with such a high resolution. The good news is they’re highly prized by miners so you’ll get a good amount for it second hand. Look to replace it with a 6700XT or 3070 at minimum for such a high res. A 6800XT or 3080/Ti would be better though. It’s a lot of pixels to push.

I have the Samsung CRG90, which is 5120x1440 @120hz. You're driving about 10% less pixels than 4k at that resolution.

I'm driving it with a 2070 at the moment, which isn't ideal, but I'm not prepared to bend over for a GPU....so I'm holding out for next gen for an upgrade. I play Apex, Halo Infinite, Hitman, Flight Sim....they all look pretty good with a bit of judicious settings tweaking. Apex I let resolution scaling pin it at a minimum 100fps.

Your 5700XT is a tiny bit faster. If you're ok with spending a bit of time tweaking settings to get a decent smooth framerate, go for it.

I absolutely won't go back to narrower form factors, it's perfect for gaming and work.

Hi there,

Thanks for your replies.

I am happy to upgrade my graphics card if I have to that isn't much of an issue.

My problem I think is going to be how I currently work. I have a main PC for gaming etc. and then a work laptop (DisplayPort and VGA connector) and I have a KVM setup so I can flick a switch and either have 2 screens for work or 1 screen for my main pc. Being able to switch back and forth is very handy and I want to keep this setup which isn't possible on the 49" ultrawide monitor. I know you can do PBP but my concern is that the area I have to work in will be smaller than my current 2x27" setup and that is annoying. Plus the area for my main PC will be quite small which is also annoying.

Thus I might have to look at a dual setup but increase the screen size to 32". Would my RX 5700 XT card handle 2 x 32" screens or would I have to upgrade that too?

Really wish I could try out a G9 with 2 computers attached to see if the working space would be enough!

it is the resolution of the monitors that determine load on the graphics card. If your 27” panels are the same resolution as the 32” ones you are considering there will be no difference in terms of load. Both sizes will display exactly the same picture everything will just be a bit bigger on the 32”.

^ What he said, but assuming we are probably talking 1440P 27" and 32" panels here then gaming on a single one of those will be considerably easier on the GPU than a 5120x1440 super-ultrawide. If however we aree talking a 4K 32" panel, then it will be about the same as the super-ultrawide.

Have you considered a 34" ultrawide at all, much easier to drive for gaming purposes, it's about 30% more pixels than a 16:9 1440P model and pairing that with one of your 27" displays or maybe even both if you can fit them in, assuming they are 1440P 27s at least so the vertical resolution matches, you haven't said at all and the resolution is what really matters here rather than the physical size when to how hard they are to drive but both are important for trying to match res and size to create a seamless workspace. But, physically a 27" monitor is the same height as a 34" ultrawide, the ultrawide is just ...wider, so if you have the space, placing a 27" 16:9 panel either side of a 34" ultrawide could give you a large and flexible workspace, you could game on the 34" and work across all 3 if your work laptop can actually drive all 3, if not, perhaps just the 34" and a 27" (I say this as my laptop can only drive 2 and it's internal display, which is irritating)
