Recommend me a surround sound system!

I really do like that teufel concept r 2, shame it comes with no cables at all!

Suddenly my budget seems to have doubled lol

If you use quidco the Teufel speakers can be had with 15% off plus 10% cash back, which makes them about £270.
I don't think any speaker sets come with cable, but some decent stuff can be had cheaply from the auction site.

If you can and want to spend more then by all means do, but considering you were almost going to end up with a Samsung system not two days ago, you don't necessarily need to be spending massive amounts. People on here will happily spend money for you that you don't have!

agreed , why i originally recommended to start and buy a pair of bookshelves, and build a decent set up over time, adding sub, center and then rears, because most of those "good deals 5.1 packs" are usually terrible and people get suckered with omg looks shiny and wow 250w ;)

welcome to the club, you're not alone ;)

the teufel look nice but for about same money i would bet the Wharfdedale Diamond 10.0 5.1 pack would sound better http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/6739 save £230 usual price  or Tannoy F1 5.1 pack http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/7317

There not tallboy or floor standing though :(

That is true, not staying I have this type of money to just chuck around but I do want a decent setup that will actually work well and last! Maybe I should start with a amp :)

I have a set off tallboys from a mate of mine turns out he has some kicking about in this loft so he's giving me them for now then when I can afford it maybe I'll start building the speaker package to replace those :)

Will the amp make these cheap speakers still sound pretty good / ok?? I'm new to all of this!

You're going to have to accept compromises

If you want a set of 5.1 surround sound speakers, in a nice stylist piano black finish that are floorstanding, you're going to have to accept cheap rubbish and buy one of the All in one 5.1 Kits

If your budget is £300 this may be for the best.

To Get a good quality setup with floorstanders with separetes you're going to need double that.

Which are you going to compromise, quality or your budget ?

If you want to go separates, then get yourself a good receiver and player and some half decent bookshelf speakers

You can add floorstanders later. Good floorstanders can take up your whole budget on their own ... twice /3 times over.

I think your right, im liking the reviews and price of the Denon AVR 1611 as for book shelves I have no idea what type I'd be looking at would these be classed as my front speakers? Next to the tv

Right ok :)

So do we all think the Denon AVR 1611 is a fairly good choice trying to find a place through quid co for it lol but doesn't seem anywhere

I've seen the 1611 for is £229.95 (a quick google for Denon AVR 1611 brings it up in the shopping section) but that store isn't on quidco. Still the cheapest that I've found though.

I haven't no! I have been offered a set of Mordaunt Short Avant 906i for £200 but again more than I was going to spend lol I haven't really got any idea what is a good start! Will have to look at some reviews and decide then I guess!

go look at classifieds at avforums, you can get B&W older 600 series for under £100 ;)

if new, then your best bet is Tannoy F1, Wharfedale Diamonds 9.0 (under £100), or the discontinued Monitor Audio BR series - some hi-fi shops still have stock and discount them to clear for new line

remember to book an audition, and test different speakers/set ups, so you can decide what sound you like best. forums is good place to start for info, but decision should be made after auditions

i was utterly bewildered when trying to get my home cinema setup. Agonizing over which was best and what to get.

One thing to remember about the hi-fi and home cinema industry is the ammount of snobbery about. You'll find people who'll swear blind that a £1000 kettle lead improves their sound quality if you look hard enough.

Just find something local to you thats in your budget, and you like the look of, and has a decent reputation. You can always change later on down the line if you get bored of them / want to upgrade.
