I have been asked by a friend this question, the budget is around £400-500 MAX!

i haven't a clue about these things but know some of you guys are into this kind of thing so was wondering if there were any recommendations?

Thanks for any help

What are you interested in observing - planetary or deep space objects?

Skywatcher Skyliner 200P Dobsonian for ~£250 is a great starter scope, but you need to consider space and storage, but it has a smaller footprint than you might think compared to a tripod.
Skymax 127 SynScan AZ GOTO or Celestron Nexstar 127 SLT for ~£350 is smaller aperture but is computerised might be another one to look at which is a popular starter scope. A lot of people think GoTo is overrated though.

It all depends upon your needs, the dob will likely be the most recommended, there's no need to spend £500 on a first scope.

This is for a 75 year old man, was wondering if there is anything with GPS and easy to use that could point itself to different objects? Might be a long shot :)

I bought a meade gps one a few years back. Never really got it to work, saw bugger all and gave up. HTH.

You'll be after a GOTO scope then... it all depends on your budget really, but they're not cheap! ;)
