I have a period of about 6 months coming up, where I will be working about 50 miles away from home with a daily commute up the M6 to look forward too.

I'm looking to get myself a new bike and fancy a Tourer, I actually quite like the look of the Versys.

Anyway, by budget is between £2 - £3k and I'm looking for something which is reliable, comfortable to ride for an hour each way (I'm 6'2") and is also quite economical on the fuel front.

Any recommendations or advice very much welcome as always.

Sports tourer maybe? You could probably pick up a nice Blackbird or Hayabusa for £3000 now. Those would be fantastic for running up and down the M6.

Haha, I suppose it does depend a lot on your wrist... ;) I suppose it's more accurate to say they 'can' do 50mpg :D

Funnily enough I've been looking at the K1300s, I reckon when I retire my CB400 from commuting duties in a couple of years one of these may fill it's spot.

I had a similar requirement earlier this year, but didn't want to fork out too much cash for something I would be selling on later.

Picked up a slightly beaten up ST1100 Pan European with MOT left for £850, did a few simple jobs to tidy it up and fresh tyres and it has performed admirably since. Very Comfy, surprisingly easy to handle and about 50 mpg when ridden sensibly. The only real downside is the bulk of it when manual handling your way out of a parking space etc.

Now it's done the job, I most likely won't have too much trouble reselling it. Breakers go for more, and there is always a market.

Save some cash and get an FJ1200 - You can pick them up in great nick for well under a grand, they're bullet-proof, hold their resale value, are blindingly easy to maintain, parts are cheap and plentiful, low cost on the insurance... and really are designed for motorway fun.

As a commuter, they'll go like the clappers if you wrench the throttle, but also make for a gentle ride if you're knackered after work and just not in the mood for 160mph.

Being 6ft2 & sitting on the M6 you'll need something with a Decent screen, You can go 2 ways either get a Big ugly thing like one of the BMW's mentioned which will of course do the job real well or you can get a decent Sports Tourer & stick a double bubble screen on it. Pick the right one & you get something that looks fabulous, Doesn't age & you can have fun on it during the weekends as well.
Funny enough I'm in the same boat & am 6ft5 & looking for something to do some miles on & have come to the conclusion that a Bussa is what You & Me need in our lives. There's some real decent low mileage Hayabusas out there with say 20-30k up them that have barely been run in & have been looked after like children all there lives.
Seriously under-rated bike & a future Classic in my opinion, Grab one while there are still decent low mileage cheap ones about.

Whose on about Changing Bikes ? :D

I came to the conclusion a while back that there is not a 1 bike only option. :p

The problem is all the bikes I want are similar so I can't justify having 3 of them :p

Plus houses here start at £400k and I want to start a family soon so there's some rubbish about priorities that the ball and chain keeps telling me about too :(
