Recommend me a web host! (and a request for general beginners help...)

Vidahost and TSOHost will be the two recommended here. I have two accounts with the former.

Out of curiosity, why is this the case? Not that I have any issue with narrowing my options - frankly the less distraction the higher the likelihood of me nailing it and getting my site up and running sometime this century!

looking at the http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ site, there's a plethora of possibilities out there.

I also note that one of the contributors to this thread and forum appears to be intimately involved in the machinations of Vidahost ;)

Since starting this thread I have also received PMs from other locally-based webhosting companies - is this a conspiracy?! :D (though seriously thanks for the suggestions, private and otherwise; I'm up for anything at the moment though have some specific requirements I'm not sure every webhost would be best placed to accommodate)

Yes once it was determined not to be an issue with the hosting i didn't expect help as it's not my webhosts problem. Tsohost provided a fix, admittedly after much googling I came to a better one. All my sites are with vidahost and will continue to be.
Any chance you could email over the fix as it was certainly an odd one! :D I don't like problems I can't fix :p

Solnyshko - offhand at least 6 members on the forum work for / own hosting companies including most of the ones recommended so far most of which are among the most-ranked hosts on www.ochostreview.co.uk which was setup by an OcUK forum member and host owner a few years back to aid the forum members in choosing a decent host, and hopefully help people avoid bad choices as it can be a confusing minefield!

I don't know much about Vodahost other than we often get calls from very confused clients of theirs (or rather - confused when we say we can't help as they're calling the wrong company!), not heard of Photium and Clikpic I've heard of but not used.

I quickly recommended Wordpress earlier but for photos a specilaist solution could be better - Smugmug is another choice. Depends if you want a simple site or a 'solution' to let you easily sell etc.

I'd take a look round the photography forum here too.

Ah very enlightening. Thanks Beansprout. You reference Vodahost, which I imagine is a completely different kettle of fish to Bath-based Vidahost. I have heard pretty awful stuff about the north american company.

Smugmug is, not unlike Clikpic & Photinium, one of those dedicated services I would say are somewhat overpriced and limited given the alternatives (if you have access and time to build your own).

The simple 'solution' as you cite, may not be the best for me at this point as am hoping to put together something quite unique.

a) Their customer service is second-to-none. I can't speak for TSOHost, but Vidahost reply to every ticket within 10 minutes at most and their phone service is both free and knowledgeable. I have two accounts as one's for my own businesses and the other's a reseller account.
b) It's a snowball effect. But you don't get to be a big snowball without loads of happy little ones in the first place, so even if it slightly bias it's for a reason.

+1 for wordpress, easy to use and can be far more than just a photo site.
Problem is there are so many plugins now you can search for hours and hours to get what you want...but I suppose that's half the fun!
TSOHost is my preferred option, but hear only good things about vidahost too - take a look at both sites and take your pick. Both have an option for one-click install of wordpress too, so no faffing around with databases etc.

I just emailed vidahost with a question relating to email forwarding and they replied in less than a minute
