Recommend me an IP Localising service/database

Hi all,

A client of mine is looking to include a level of personalisation on their website depending on where the visitor is - all good in the hood, I need an IP localising service which I'm prepared to pay for.

The problem is the only ones I've found aren't accurate enough. For example, they list my city as being London, when I'm in Milton Keynes.

The only one I've found that gave me the right city was this one, but it's online only - I need to have a .NET component/database/something I can put on my server and run.

Has anyone got any experience of this to recommend me something?

Surely these depend on where your exit point to the internet are though? Apparently I'm in London right now because that's where my ISP must be based.

Not of much help, but on the rare occasion i've accidently stumbled onto a site with some women without many clothes on, they seem to always know exactly where I am, so they must have an excellent database. It's localised to town correctness. Might be worth taking a look somewhere in the adult website world.

afaik they buy this from facebook type sites, as you tell them yourself exactly where you live so far less likely to be wrong.

maybe a little ot but i know peoples own attempts at getting the ip can be really bad at finding the town but how easy is it to find the country? i.e. say to stop spam to a forum i said if not in uk then needs verification.

Rubbish, even if facebook sold them such personal information, how would they link your IP address/your computer to a facebook account?

like facebook, sorry i don't use facebook so don't know what info you put into them but don't you put in your town address? that would be how. they know your ip from when you sign in, then they know your location from when you tell them it. same for google (though i don't know if they'd sell this stuff) but they for sure will be using it in applications like analytics.
