I've currently got a Sony Walkman mp3 player and, to be frank, it's a real pain to get the music on and off. If I was going to get something a bit more Linux friendly, what would you suggest? I'm looking for something that will play mp3 (and ogg if possible) as well as video. Something small preferably too.

Is there anything?

A Zune. That would show MS :p

In all fairness I want a Zune and I'm just waiting for them to come to Europe... if they ever do.

But I guess what you want is something that can easily show up as a external drive in linux. So anything that doesn't use software such as iPod (even though my guess is it works fine in linux) would be fine.

A few episodes ago on LUG Radio they made a wholehearted recommendation, but I can't remember it for the life of me. When I get home I might have to listen to some back episodes. You might also be able to find it using the Googles.

EDIT: It may have been the Cowon iAudio X5, but I could be hallucinating due to caffeine withdrawal.

Perhaps the problem that I have with my old iPod is that it is a nano. I seem to remember that there are problems with some of them (mine is a 2nd gen) and that the normal type of iPod works much better. Can anybody confirm this? Would I be better off with one of the newer nano models?

If you can manage to update the firmware with iTunes then your nano should be the same as the newer models I would have thought.

I've used a nano and an iriver iclix fine on Linux via Amarok (with the various libs required for the devices), wouldn't reccomend the iriver, they pretty much won't support anything and have pulled out of the market.

I really like Amarok but there isn't really much to compare to it on the Gnome front. Exhaile is good but it's not up to Amarok standards yet, I like to keep everything GTK if I can so that it all looks nicely integrated. Perhaps I should just go back to Amarok for now as my guilty KDE pleasure:p

Banshee is made with the GTK i never got it to work but that was over a year ago, im sure it's preogressed, supposed to be good with Ipods

The new Sony Walkmans are really quite friendly; drag and drop all round.... is there a problem with that?

Mine is a Nano, working top notch

In what manner is yours not working?

My old nano was a very strange beast, sometimes it would connect and mount automatically and sometimes I would have to mount it from the terminal. When I tried to copy things over to it it would frequently crash and I never understood why.

Hxc - my Sony Walkman is ok, it mounts ok and copies files across fairly well but sometimes locks up like my old ipod nano. I was thinking I might get a "memory stick" style mp3 player for the gym and a newer video playing one for on the train, bus etc. I guess part of the problem is that it works seamlessly in WMP in XP and copies album artwork etc and in Linux it doesn't seem possible.

I think you're right abut Cowon mp3 players showing up as external drives in linux.
