For the last 6 years I been using my i5-2500k cpu, all going great, been looking at upgrading mainly for games, and looking at Oculus Rift. I updated the graphics card about 2 years ago to a Nvidia 970, but CPU is showing its age a bit. I like to stay with Intel, so all I need is a mobo, CPU, ram and maybe a aftermarket cooler. Looking to spend around £400

This TBH. And SSD if you haven't already.

The issue is if you want board, CPU and RAM, 16GB of DDR4 is nearly half your budget.

seems like the i7-3770K is the best/fastest CPU for my mobo.

I just upgraded to a friends I7-6700k chipset, added 16GB DDR4 ram

Ive got a 2500k, GTX 970, 16gb ram and a 250gb ssd. My machine runs everything I throw at it as 1080p but I’ve overclocked the cpu and gpu.

Given the distressingly high cost of gpus and cpus these days, a meaningful upgrade will cost around £700 - an outrageous amount of money but one retailers simply get away with
