Hi,
I want to get a new smaller Notebook so my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 (2.1 processor, 2GB ram) is going to be spare. As it`s not worth much I might as well keep it and was thinking about getting a version of Linux running on it, rather than installing it into a Virtual MAchine. I`ve used Linux before and used Unix also and will be good to keep it as a skill.

So what is a good version of Linux to install these days? I`ve used mostly Redhat and Suse in the past. Are there drivers for Wifi? How about 3G USB sticks, can those be made to work with Linux? If not it`s no big deal but I will need the Wifi working. A friend recommended Gentoo but he spends half of his life getting it working just right, and I don`t have time for that, just want to install it, have little problem getting Wifi working, sound etc, and then use it, possible running a web server on it on my LAN and using it for scripting and software development.

Cheers!

If you're buying a new Dell most of them have an option to buy them with Linux pre-installed. This is probably easiest as no hassle of installation and you can be sure all the hardware is supported and you'll have driver updates etc easily available on the Dell site.

Cheers all, Ubuntu it is then.

I will probably get a new Dell (XPS 1330) but Linux will be installed on the old Laptop, I think the daily machine will have to remain Windows to maintain compatibility with software at clients I work with. Having said that, you`ve got me thinking! If Linux can do all the MS Office stuff (and it does I think?), run VM (Virtual Box so I can use windows if need to) I could have Linux on the new box. is there a linux version of Visio? VBA? If not I could run this in the Windows VM, think I`ve got a spare version of XP somewhere.....
