I used to pop by a Savanna shop on my way to work every week or 2 to pick up some Chili Chutney Biltong for the workshop, sadly though, the shop has closed down due to the renovations at London Bridge station.
We've been months without biltong, but we've all got a hankering for it again, we were going to order some off Savanna's website, but they charge a fortune for delivery.

Anyone out there got some suggestions for biltong shops/websites?

These guys are one of, if not, the best in the UK. There are also a few saffer shops around Wimbledon, there's one t Earlsfield too. The London Bridge one was insanely overpriced, you'll be amazed at what you get for the same money online.

There's a Savanna at Paddington.. I usually take a detour when I'm craving some Chili Chutney myself :p

I used to work with a guy whose uncle made biltong. He sold me bags for £10/kilo and it was good too, although only "original" flavour. Pity I lost contact with him. Lovely bloke too, I'd be working with him and suddenly he'd have this massive grin on his face and when I asked him what's up, he'd tell me he's thinking about the good news and how excited he is that Jesus is coming to save us. No jokes either, 100% legit. Proper old school south African boer.

The South African shop in the arches shopping area below Charing Cross station, London. Access from Villiers street. specialist Biltong and the like.

There's also a Vietnamese kitchen down there that sells excellent pho, but that's another discussion...

It was about 5 years ago, but I did a big biltong comparison with a load of workmates and we decided Biltong direct was the best mail order place :) The Chili Snap Sticks are amazing!

That being said i've bought from these guys: https://best-biltong.myshopify.com/ and it was very good (albeit in their Guildford shop, but i'd assume it'll be the same stuff as that online)

I haven't heard it but a good friend of mine recommends the below:

Another vote for Randsavers, who have another shop local to us as well as others in London: http://www.southafricanshop.co.uk/store/about_us

Not tried Biltong Direct, although they look to have about the same selection, including all the other groceries.
Cannot live without TV Bars!!

As mentioned, most people who care enough for decent stuff make their own and it's something I keep meaning to get around to myself.
I personally prefer shopping in person to be sure of getting exactly what I want in exactly the condition I require, although I'm more of a droewors fiend anyway.

The South African shop is great. Used to get loads there. They also had a deal on a long time ago for 3 for 2, which meant 300 of biltong for £10, which they honoured a long time after they stopped advertising it if you asked and. I usually ended up spending about £25 in there a time.

Out of interest what cut do you use that made it cheaper? We made our own for a while but unless we used something like stewing steak we just couldn't get cheaper than buying it.

Also, not really biltong, but still worth checking out is Martin's Jerked Meats, as well as their other products:

If you like it spicy, some of their range is *truly* spicy and powerful!
While many retailers claim to be seriously spicy, few can actually deliver and none so truly as Martin. I personally think spicy food lovers are insane, but I have it on pretty good Saffie authority that no-one else in over 50 years has come close to being this spicy!!

On the flip side, the likes of their Tennesee whisky, honey, red wine, black pepper and horseradish products are all gorgeous!!

Right, own up you bliksems, how many of you are saffers? :D

*raises hand*

Saffer here! :)

I usually buy silverside or topside, whichever I prefer the look of on the day, from our local butcher and I get around 2kg for about £18 - £20. I get them to cut it into strips for me and then all I do is put the spice rub on it for about 4 hours, then hang the strips for 2 - 3 days in the box I have. Saying this is making me want to get some beef tomorrow!

At a push, I've bought silverside or topside from Sainsburys as well. That came to about £17 for just under 2kg at the time. I bought that from the butcher's counter. It worked perfectly as well.

My price comparison factors in delivery from wherever you buy it from as well. But most places I've ever looked before I got the biltong box wanted around £15 - £18 per 500g biltong. I can make four times the amount for that price at home, and I just have to wait a few days. The spice mix lasts ages as well.

OMG TV bars! I miss them so much! The white bar was my absolute favourite. Ocado do a lot of South African produce (Romany Creams, Tennis Biscuits, Peppermint Crisps, Simba) but no TV bars :(
