Bought a few games in the steam sale recently and I have to say I'm slightly fed up with open world games although I haven't installed the Witcher 3 yet which a lot of people rate highly, but others are just not grabbing my attention, I'm bored of endless running around basically doing nothing, all open world games seem to follow the same formula of fetch quests and a lot of side quests that distract from the main story but you feel like you have to do them to gain items/abilities.
Does anyone else agree with this? The last "modern" game I completed that really had me hooked was Doom, and that was really good, fast paced action from start to finish. And it didn't even have much of a story to it.
Another one that's not a PC title but really had me hooked was The Last of Us, really enjoyed the story behind it and wanting to find out what was going to happen next, the game play itself was nothing special but not bad, it still had the item finding and crafting that a lot of these open world titles seem to have but being linear kept it at a good pace and with a decent amount of action in between.
Are there any good modern games out there that have a solid story line and consistent gameplay rather than doing a quest and then wasting 10 minutes walking around the world to find the next one?
