Recommend me some free backup software

As the title says,
i want to backup NTFS partitions (doesnt matter if it is a bit by bit copy) from one partition to another on the same disk, preferably compressed to individual files

Try Drive Snapshot

As long as you back it up to a FAT32 partition, it will restore from DOS (and if you look hard enough, there is a DOS program that allows you to read NTFS partitions)

It gives you full functionality for 30 days, but the restore ability is forever. Perfect for taking an initial snapshot of your machine

I'm currently using 'NTBackup' built into XP and it works a treat. Some great functionality and with the scheduling ability it's definitely useful.

As for drive images/snapshots free software, I'd go with the above suggestions!

if its just for individual folders.. robocopy rules, also synctoy from MS is really good (both are ms products)

backing up to the same drive seems a bit dangerous tho tbh..

ntbackup has some nifty tools indeed
i made my initial image using SavePart, but the program is pretty crappy as you have to save the backup in multiple files if the filesize is above 2gb
