planning on building an intel system with a e8400 processor

which motherboard should i go for? i want something relatively inexpensive that is reliable and stable , i dont need crossfire or sli and i wont be overclocking by much (if at all)

i also want some memory, i dont want anything fancy just something that will do the job but will be reliable and be fast enough to keep the system nice and punchy, i think 2gb should be enough - any recomendations?

Powersupplies... what kind of wattage will i need?
system will be e8400,2gb ram, 8800gt gfx card, 2 / 3 hard disks, dvd burner
will 500 watt do?
would like something on a budget that again is reliable but also quite(ish)

thanks in advance

Abit IP35-E motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (or whatever PC2-6400 is cheapest when you order)
Corsair HX 520 power supply

RAM is so cheap nowadays it makes a lot of sense to go with 2 x 2 GiB modules.

Not overclocking an E8400? That is almost criminal.

Anyway, something based around the P35 chipset would be a good option so the parts below would do you fine and the motherboard does give you options to overclock in the future should you want to.

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £59.99
(£70.49) £59.99

(£27.01)
OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £54.99

//edit more or less the same as Billy suggests but a slightly cheaper motherboard. :)

would i be better performance wise buying 2 sets of the 2x1gb kits - £54

or buy 1 set of 2x2gb sticks- which costs a bit more

heh, its for my dad who wont care about an extra few mhz, the e8400 alone will make his current pc seem like a dinosaur
couple that with a 8800gt or nv9600 when available and plently of ram then he`ll be be well happy

2 x 2 GiB would be better. It's worth the extra 10 quid or whatever it would cost.

What's is he going to use the machine to do?

downloading , encoding, games once in a while sound/music editing, photo editing , the usual type of stuff, mainly the sound/music as he prepares stuff for when he goes gigging although i doubt that takes much of his processing power

will this motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-089-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=913 be better than the abit an ocuk ones with its copper heatpipe thingy? or is it just a gimmick?

could do with the pc being reasonably quiet

well finally decided on most of the kit im getting, bar the motherboard

intel e8400 cpu

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series CAS 5-5-5-18 , 2.1-2.2v VDIMM

corsair 620watt psu

8800gt or 9600gt gfx

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500gb harddisk

any further recommendations on a motherboard?
anything wrong with this set up that i should know?

The 620w would be rather overkill for the system you have there but it is up to you.

As for motherboard either an Asus P5K SE or Gigabyte DS3R would be sound options although you might want to check whether they will automatically supply 2.1v to the Ram or if you need to change the values manually.

ta

well i thought of the 620w because in 2 yrs time an upgrade might need the extra juice and these psu`s have 5yr warranties

going to go have a read up on those motherboards , not going to be overclocking as this is for my dad so i only need something thats reliable

what about the ram, is that 4gb kit ok? will it hold performance back at all?

edit: or maybe for ram - G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-6400C5 (2x2GB) (F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ) CAS 5-5-5-15 , 1.8-2.0v VDIMM - slightly lower voltage and better timings if that makes any difference?
