Namely, a technical introduction to the concepts that underpin it.

I am just starting to play with Ubuntu and while I am learning a lot from it, I don't understand how the system, linux that is, works. Can anyone recommend anything?

Let me know if this post does not make any sense and I will try to explain further! :)

Don't have any books to recommend, but would happily (along with others, I bet) field questions :)

When you say you "don't understand how the system ... works" - could you be more specific? Are you looking for in-depth knowledge about how the kernel is structured, or something else?

yes thats right, the fundamental nuts and bolts. From the group up.

I only want a basic knowledge, I am interested in it primarily as a free form of software and my use of computers these days is pretty simple, web, occasional movie, etc, so won't need to manipulate it loads.

but I do want to 'understand' how it all fits together, as you say, Kernel, the fundamental aspect to all systems.
