Have there been any good strategy games over the past few years?

I used to play a few RTS games like AOE2 (still play it to this day), Stronghold, the Settlers 3, and also turn based games like the original Age of Wonders which I sometimes still play (didn't like the look of the sequels) and Medieval 2 Total War.

Is there anything modern, with either medieval/fantasy setting (futuristic/space setting does not appeal to me) that's better than the old classics like AOE? I liked the combat side of M2:Total War but the map part of it was far too slow paced. Stronghold was fun for the castle building/defensive side of things but the units and combat were very basic.

Anything out there worth trying? There seems to be a flood of FPS/RPG games but rarely ever hear about strategy games these days, they used to be popular.

I too would like to see some games like those return. The closet thing in recent years I have enjoyed is Banished. Another game which I am completely addicted to at the moment (700+ hours) is Factorio. It's slightly different in that you have to build a factory to automate the production of various items. There is a free demo. Be prepared to lose many hours of your life!

Company or Heroes 1 and 2.
Warcraft 3
Supreme Commander 1 and Forged Alliance (not the second one though)

Shame you don't like the Total War series. Some of the best strategy games ever released are in that series.

Have you looked into the heroes of might and magic series. Also jagged alliance 2 is great if you not played it

Northgard, it's on steam and it's a bit like Settlers. Not the deepest game by any means but a very satisfying game. Got to admit I've seen me playing it for 2 hours straight and thinking it was 15 mins recently !

Here's a let's play of an earlier version, very similar though to the current patch.

Combat isn't exactly advanced but it's an awesome little game.

Warhammer total war.

Its rts and turnbased mixed together. Recently started this myself as theres no good rts's out at the moment and really enjoying it

Also a lot more streamlined than the old total wars
