My PC is getting a bit long in the tooth. Over the last 4 years I have already replaced the GFX card, and the PSU went pop and took the Mb so they got replaced too ages ago.

Mainboard : Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H
Chipset : nVidia GeForce 7100
Processor : Intel Pentium 4 550 @ 3400MHz
Physical Memory : 2048MB (1 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

Runs older games fine, but i wanted to know if some cheap upgrades (CPU and case/fan are obvious to me) would be worth it, or if i should just wait till i can afford something decent.

The Case is an old Medion one with no case fans.
PSu is an unbranded job i got cheap when i bought the MB

if you want to upgrade any of your parts, first thing i would change is the PSU, reason being you don't want to damage your new upgraded parts.

to be honest, just keep it as it is and buy something a bit decent when you save up.

Thanks for your replies, both of you.
Can you suggest a good psu that will be capable of running a future build for me, assuming I were to pull together an all singing all dancing system in the next 12 months? I would also like a recommendation on a case. I want something that will look good in my sitting room, so something that looks classy, and expensively tasteful.
I've never done my own build before, although i have done plenty of repairs and component upgrades. I want a case that i can use for the next 10 years say, so I prefer tasteful over fashionable.

I did likewise recently, been saving for ages to get a better machine..

I wanted a case that would last years and bought the antec 1200..which has enough space and has the possibilty of water cooling as well as air....components only seem to be getting hotter so..wanted something I could add to..(recently put a 470 in ..and if i did not have the 1200 ..it may have been difficult)..

Only downside of the 1200..which for me was a plus..was the sheer size..it huge..so I love it..but if I had it in teh living room..the misses would probably want to cover it in cushions of something like that..

Coolermaster and Antec's get very good reviews and if mine is anything to go by ..built to last..

One thing I have been doing to pay for pc upgrades is join a site like topcashback and try and buy everything you can via it...the cashback for me went into a pot and then paid for splurges...

Case wise, look at the Lian Li's, very classy, will fit right in, any of them, depending on your budget (I've got the A71FB personally, lovely), PSU wise, XFX are good value, could get 850W which should be good for future system, if youre thinking of a beast of a future system, dual 480s, OCd i7 or equivalent then you might want more, 1000/1200W in which case prob have to look at Corsair or BeQuiet, but if youre just building a good gaming PC 850W should be enough, alternatively if its only ever going to be something like an i5 with single card set up, 650W would be fine, Id again look at the XFX
