The wife's laptop is a couple of years old now, she's got an inspiron 1720. The graphics card in it is a nvidia geforce 8400 m gs, and the processor is an intel core duo t5450 @ 1.66 ghz.

She basically wants something a bit faster and more modern than what she's got. Hopefully to last her a few years, she plays mmos (star wars old republic I think) and wants to be able to play that (and possibly some other "new" games) on highest settings with all the bells and whistles, she would also like it to start a bit faster than her current laptop (so I was thinking maybe an SSS drive but I don't know if its necessary ). It has to have a blu ray player on it for the kids movies and a 17 inch screen if possible .
She wantedto do a bit of editing work but don't worry she can do this on my new pc if I ever get around to ordering it (going to get a 3770k processor in it to stop her moaning ) so this is no longer a requirement

The budget is 1000 or so (possibly going to 1400 if it's a justified)

Help us out please and recommend something that ticks the boxes

Hi there,

have a look at my thread on the new Inspiron SE just further down the page. The 17" version is effectively the same thing but obviously you can spec it with a normal mechanical drive for storage and an additional SSD to put the OS/games on so that is going to tick the boxes for quick loading times.

The other option is a Vortex or Opimus III which is based on a Clevo chasis. The former can be specced with a AMD 7970m which is pretty much king of the hill in terms of mobile GPU performance. The Optimus III is the cheaper model and can be specced with a Geforce 650M which is no slouch either.

If style is a bit more important then maybe something from the Samsung range. They look pretty swish.

when you see this thread title from main forums you see .....

Recommend my wife a 17inch...

lols

+1 thats exactly what I saw, did a double take and dropped in to see what was going on.

to OP Samsung is a good brand expensive for price, but look nice

Lol you all need to get your head out the gutter :d although im sure the wife might send photos if you get her a damn good deal :p

I was lookin at the samsungs but wasn't really sure if it was overkill (they were on offer here last week )

It's really the different processors and graphics cards I don't understand (ie whats good and what's bad) and also the sanding had a 8th SSd cache or something and I wasn't sure if that would do

Thanks mate, where does the 650m rank in terms of graphics cards?
The only issue id have with that one is no solid state drive (even a
Small one for op system etc) , other than that it looks decent

Have a look here its in class 1 list so decent http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html ,

I have the 15.6" version coming tomorrow, read it has space for 2nd HD(reading the manual) so I'll probably stick SSD in at some point too.

I'm still torn between samsung and the inspiron 17 r se , only thing is they don't do one with SSd pre installed (and I'd be terrified of breaking it doing it myself after buying it)

If I did go for the more Expensive samsung overclockers sell with the 8gb SSd cache (or whatever the 8gb is) how was would that be and would it be faster and ultimately a good deal?

Have a look at the manual http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/series-5-rf-series/NP550P7C-S03HK-support tells you how to install HD,not hard, however if you are not keen on doing it then guess you got to decide between the Dell and OcUK one ,also do a google search on the "The 17.3" Optimus III" sorry can't link it due to forum rules , that has options including SSD ,your call on that m8.

Right unless someone thinks there's better value elsewhere I'm going to go for the samsung 700G7C , going to keep looking around, next time I find it on sale I'm going for it, can you (well someone competent) put a SSd in this In the future, or does it only have two harddrive places?

I have here

17.3" MATTE Full HD LED Widescreen
i7-3610QM
8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600MHz
AMD® Radeon® HD 7970M
750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK x2
Windows 7 Home Premium 64

= £1450 (Inc VAT + PnP)

The GPU will be 1.7x better than the Samsung's 675M and all the for the same price!

I cannot post a link to the laptop but the if you do some googling of the name 'Vortex III' you can find your way to it

thanks
it still wouldnt solve the solid state drive issue (that bumps the price up quite a bit i appreciate)

To see Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875, I bought in USA last week, Intel Core i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT 650M, it can play many new games with this specs, only $820, but I don't sure whether can get it in UK.

The Ebay one is used and not a good price for a used model £1200.

You can get them new for £1310 if you shop about on google for that model now with a proper warranty and not used.

I'm guessing it's your laptop you are trying to sell here if so it's not allowed here to do that and you need to remove that link and stick it for sale on the members market that we have here.

::EDIT:: BananaBill i'm guessing you gonna say bye bye to that OCUK account soon nice spamming.

Buy the SSD on its own and install it later, you can still buy a very good laptop + SSD way within your budget

how hard is it to put a ssd in a laptop? is there many cables etc (remembering ive NEVER done anything remotely to do with building a computer, never even changed a fan , and im a bit scared to do it)

also if the laptop came with an operating system pre-installed, but i wanted it on the ssd, would THAT cause problems?

On that machine it is literally a few screws to install the new SSD. There are no wires needed to fiddle around with! It should be pretty straight forward and will give you more tech confidence :D

Do not quote me on that however, I do not own this laptop I just have done some research

If you do however get into a pickle with it a fellow OCUK member (Meaker He owns a very very similar system) may be able to help you out if you ask him kindly

As of Windows, I do not know. Im pretty sure when you buy it it will come with a Windows DVD. You can then install it onto the SSD, format the HDD and install the drivers. Again any problems a quick google, phone call to the seller or ask on here will help you out! (:
