Hey at present I am pretty sure my GPU is on its way out as is my PSU so im looking to upgrade these primarily then a few months after my Mobo/CPU/Ram.

Im looking to upgrade in January so I may find a few decent deals then but im looking to spend around £300ish mbe a bit more on a new Graphics card and ofc new PSU to support it.

This is my current spec

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition @ 2.6Ghz (Sucky Mobo For OCing :<)
4 GB DDR2 Ram
Asus M2N-E SLi
Geforce 8800 GTS
2 * 1920 * 1200 Monitors
Not 100% sure but my PSU is 500w Modular

Recommendations greatly appreciated!

I am not going to go into the rest of your system, I am just going to anwser your question at hand. Going to give you a couple of easy options:-

Best performance

£73
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-136-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502
£180

Thats £250 quid and you got yourself a good combo. 5870 with a good solid PSU.

£73

£190

tenner more and you got Nvidia 470GTX as an option. But the first is a lot better quieter cooler and faster.

Do you mean failing or becoming obsolete due to your requirements:)

Both really, cant deal with low fps in some games now and their seems to be some kind of problem with the graphics card where it will just stop transmitting picture to the monitors and or just restart the computer now im not entirely sure the reason is the graphics card but have a hunch.

Any way thanks for the input I am going to have a look at the benchmarking of the 470 vs the 5870 but from your post the 5870 is the better performer but will just give me something to dither and the PSU looks good and im ok in saying it will be future proof if im looking at upgrading to

Asus Crosshair III
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 970 Black Edition "140W Edition" 3.50GHz
Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3

sometime in the distant future (march time)

Cheers for the help

The 5870 is a better card at stock clocks vs the GTX 470

However Overclock the 470 to 800mhz and it will be a little faster than the 5870.

Both cards are excellent value for money

No offense guys...but you are seriously recommending a GTX470/5870 to go with a thlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition @ 2.6Ghz?

I think he would see better frame rate than using a GTX470/5870 with the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition @ 2.6Ghz in more recent games like BFBC2 and Black OPs by upgrading to Athlon II X4 (around £65) + AM2+ board (around £50) or selling the 4GB DDR2 RAMs and get 4GB DDR3 RAMs (shouldn't cost too much extra consider price rise for DDR2 and price drop for DDR3) and go AM3 board (around £50~£60), and get a GTX460 768MB (around £120).

But if he's upgrading the rest of his rig in the near future, then I suppose it's alright going GTX470/5870...

thanks marine for the input indeed I know that the rest of the build isn't great but the main reason im replacing the graphics card first is because I am fairly sure its dieing out on me at present and want to make sure I have a replacement ready.

Im waiting till the January window to purchase the graphics card any way and I will hopefully find some decent deals in the sales!

Cheers !

The motherboard which the OP has can run both 95W Athlon II and Phenom II processors:

I would look at geting the 95W versions of the Phenom II X4 925 or 945 or an Athlon II X3 450. The latter can be had for under £60.

Also,if the OP has an el-cheapo PSU this should be replaced first before getting a new graphics card IMHO.
