Looking for a router for a 3 storey house i am using the Asus RT-N66U at the moment ive had it for around 5/6 years i think it will need to connect around 25 devices to it the usual...mobile phones...tablets...5 consoles....3 laptops...desktop computers which will be wired and 2 amazon fire tv.

Have a budget of around £250 can anyone recommend one that will be suitable for my needs...thanks

I recently had issues with my router, tried a few different routers and in the end I settled with google home wifi mesh wifi (3 units)

Thanks ill have a good look into that tomorrow looks great and seems to let you run a lot of devices from it i already have switches so the one port out is not a issue....just that you have to use your mobile to set it up and the lack of usb port but thats not a major issue...thanks for the info.

Are all the units the same but you set one up with your internet connection then the other ones can go say downstairs and i dont need a wire going to it.....it just connects to the first one.

Do you have Ethernet to the 3 floors? If so you might be better off with a UniFi setup with hardwired AP’s over a Mesh setup.

i have wired to all floors but all im thinking is the router is quite old and was thinking of replacing to get a more up to date router or doesnt it really matter until it packs in.

Ok so the router i have i do not have a problem with the wireless as i said because of its age i was just thinking of updating it and the router is situated on the middle floor in the middle bedroom thanks.

But when you have a thread title such as yours and talk about 24+ devices people generally aren’t going to suggest a consumer based setup as evidenced by the replies.

And it’s kind of pointless having a mesh based system if you have the option of hardwired AP/s you would just be paying more for less performance.

Ohh i see my thread title is misleading.....now i understand why people are saying what they are....ive change the thread header.
But what you guys are saying is you would not just use a router on its own for a large house.

So are you actually experiencing any problems or you just fancy something new? No shame in just wanting something new and shiny. Thing is, with hardwired ports to each floor and your decent budget, most in here (myself included) would always shy away from a one box solution and split routing from wireless access. It's better bang for buck, better coverage, better speeds most of the time and will support way more devices if you go for a decent router. It's also more readily transferable between internet connections and often comes with more features.

How do you receive your internet?

I'm not sure why people get hung-up on the number of devices. In a Domestic environment how many of those devices are ever going to be simultaneously transferring data?

You say that the existing router is a N66U but don't say why you want to replace it.

Ive had it for 5/6 years wanted something new more up to date

So what router would you recommend and what devices to go with it for wireless downstairs and upstairs meaning which access points ...i am only used to working with one router and switches never tried access points myself.

If it's not bottle necking your Internet connection and is not unstable the only really benefit you'll see is in the WiFi which you said does not concern you, so you might not be worth changing anything.

An outside consideration might be that your Router probably does not receive any sort of updates anymore to patch vulnerabilities. Such as the one that someone released information on today in the WPA2 WiFi encryption.
