Hi All,

In the market for some new glasses, nipped into a few stores today and picked some styles I liked to research online when I got back. Looked at a few online retailers and have found the same glasses almost half price, but Ideally want to buy from somewhere which is recommended.

Can anyone recommend good retailers online to buy from? SO far I have found some good deals on Eyewearbrands & Glasses Direct.

Edit* found the pair I want even cheaper than the above, but on Optical Direct.

I have my prescription to hand.

Thanks.

Thought about this myself a few times but I would be concerned about them not being right. My optician has only once put the back vertex distance (BVD) on my prescription and I've never seen the pupillary distance measurement written down, both of which can affect the outcome especially with higher levels of correction.

Edit: If you have both of the above though go ahead and let us know how it's goes :p. Optical Direct look pretty legit.

I work in an Opticians and whilst it's not recommended to get them off the internet you can see why people do.

As bobbyspangles mentioned above your Back Vertex Distance (BVD) or you pupillary distance (PD) may not be on the prescription if it's a low prescription it's much less of a concern due to tolerances but if it's quite high then the problems it can lead to just are not worth the hassle.

That said the BVD should be stated on the prescription legally if it's above 5 dioptres and is usually adjusted with the fitting of the glasses anyway rather than worked into the lens.

Out of interest what is your prescription roughly?

Thanks for replies.

My prescription is very low, only prescribed for reading and computer work. I have only been wearing glasses for 12 months now.

My current perscription is;

Dist
Right: -1.25, Sph: Plano
Left: -2.00, Sph: -0.25

Aided VA
Right & Left 6/5-1 Near N5

BVD is blank.

It also says Opticians recommendations are; Single Vision Distance, MAR.

Whatever all that means!

With that prescription the BVD won't be an issue so that's not really a concern. And an MAR coating is simply an anti-reflection coating so will be useful for extended computer use, TV and driving etc so I'd recommend having that.

Where did you purchase your last glasses from? You could phone them or go in-store and ask them what it is as it's your data so can be given to you if it's requested. It's just not in there interests to give it as standard. ;)

If a PD is given as well they won't accept responsibility for any potential problems that may occur. Also if you do go ahead and get the glasses from the internet if there are any problems with them you can still return to where your eyes were tested on the basis it may be the prescription causing the issues. If they're confident it's not there prescription they should at least be advising why the glasses are causing particular concerns.

Thanks for that, appreciate the help.

Originally bought my first set/s from Vision Express. Went in today to purchase some new pairs but then found the same frames much cheaper online (talking £120 cheaper, which includes everything Vision Express do - Lenses, Anti Glare, Scratch etc), this is what has prompted me to look at buying online.

I will give them a call tomorrow for the BVD info.

Feedback also appreciated from anyone else for recommended retailers online?

Just to note: Opticians generally won't give out PDs if they're not making the glasses. If you have a problem with your new specs, they're just opening themselves up for liability from incorrect PDs, so don't be peeved if they say no and to measure them yourself. It's also generally not measured/recorded until dispense, so they may not have it anyway. It takes quite a detailed optom to record it on the patients record during the sight exam as it's not officially part of it.

I've used CiliaryBlue for reglazing before, and that was great, but never got an entire new pair online. Good luck!

PDs are usually a part of the dispensing process so I doubt they'll give you them over the phone. It's not hard get someone to measure them for you.

I've used directsight.co.uk for the last 6 years- never had any problems.

On a slightly relaated note, I'm in the market for some soon too; as well as some prescription safety glasses (which you can't readily get - specsavers do them but they don't usually know they do an they're expensive)

- so who's the best optician to goto for a comprehensive prescription if you intend to buy online? I've thought about being upfront about it but specsavers were funny about giving the PD out.

Only used once a month back. After I'd ordered spotted lots of quite bad reviews which had me slightly worried as they did seem a bit too cheap.

Turned out to be fine, glasses arrived a week later. Quite impressed for £12.50 (+postage) including scratch resistant and AR coatings.

Cheers guys will look into the other recommendations. If anyone still see this and has used the retailers in my OP would be good to hear from you too. :)
