Thought it might be an idea to start a thread to recommend any extensions you find really useful, or request an extension you've been trying to find etc.

I'm sure most people have got Adblock/Flashget etc, so I'll start it off with a couple I've found recently that you mightn't have seen before:

Context Search.

Allows you to select/highlight text in a webpage and search from your own list of search engines for the highlighted text.

Ctrl Tab Preview.

Mimics Windows Alt + Tab to switch between your open tabs, with a thumbnail of each one.
Only downside is that it switches through the tabs in order, rather than by most recently used.

Post what you got, or ask if you're looking for something!

But you can do that in FF just change the search bar then right click the word and it will use that search.

Errorzilla

Changes the default error page from basically having a reload button to having the following choices:

a google cache,
an archival snapshot from the wayback machine,
a ping,
a trace route,
a reload button,
and a whois lookup.

Three things I really miss from IE7:

  • Auto-hide the main menu: (File, edit etc), there are ways to remove it but they permanently remove it, unlike on IE7 where you can get it back when you press Alt.
  • IE7's bookmark menu: A clean popup window that shows your bookmarks in a tree view, without having to get them from the horrible bookmarks menu. Using all-in-one sidebar you can get similar functionality, but its terribly bloated and not as nice as IE7's bookmarks.
  • Always showing broken image links, on FF images with alt="" get hidden when they break (like on many forum threads), whereas on IE7 you can always see if an image failed to load.
If anyone knows of some extensions to add that functionality I would very much appreciate it :)

Not the complete solution but I have an extension called Compact Menu which converts the main menu into small drop down menu. Kinda like a live bookmark on your toolbar.

Invaluable for me are (sorry for lack of links, they're all available through the extensions site):

Adblock
HTML Validator
FEBE
Web Developer's Toolbar
IETab
Colorzilla
Console2
DownloadThemAll

I recently found 'stumble' just select from catagories that interest you and it take you to random pages within that interest list. If you like the page, select 'like it' and it will take you to more like it in the future, click 'don't like it' and well its fairly obvious really!

I really liked this one, great for a random change, and have come across some of the funnest sites this way!

Does anybody know of an extension that will let me have 2 windows open at the same time?

As, on a W/S monitor I can have to usable windows open side-by-side, but it means opening 2 instances of FF etc.

looking for the same thing actually, have yet to find something like that. :)

There's a couple that advertise doing this, but don't work very well. IIRC they use the sidebar to open web pages, and they don't display properly.

I'm sure there must be one somewhere...:o
