I'm looking for a bit of inspiration here. I'm going through one of those phases where I want to kick the red meat and eat some more fish. Afterall, it makes for a less heavy meal late on a weekday evening and it is better for you! Normally I just end up doing a bit of salmon with mash and veg.. but that's pretty uninteresting. The only other fish I really get often is mackerel/haddock which generally goes in a risotto.

So what other fish is out there? Is it all as expensive as I think it is? If someone suggests sea bass (etc.) my first instinct is 'that's expensive, I may as well buy a steak' :p

I eat lots of Sea Bass and Sea Bream, Morrisons have been doing some cracking offers on the fresh fish counter, it works out a couple of £ per fish, with one being enough to have with some Veg etc.

Tilapia is good and scandalously cheap, it's quite meaty but a hell of a lot cheaper than bass.
Vietnamese River Cobbler is also good (ignore the scare stories on the internet).

Go to your local supermarket around 7-8pm, after the fish counter closes. I can get some great pieces of fish on reduced to clear and I either use it the next day or put it in the freezer. Got 2 sea bass fillets for £3.91 last week, supposed to be about £8.00.

I make a great smoked haddock and sweetcorn chowder, or you could put your fish in some baking paper with veg and do it in the oven - your fish stays yummy and moist with all the steam and flavour kept in.
