Just got a new notebook but the specs are not great.

core i5
intel HD graphics 520
8gb ram

Would like a strategy game to waste some time on. I like the COHeros series but not sure it would run it.

What low demanding strategy games are out there?

All of the classics - Dune, C&C, Age of Empires, older Civ games (any Sid Meier game for that matter), Sim City 4, Settlers II (20th anniversary remake).

What are your past favourites, so we can fine-tune?

Not RTS in the AoE and CoH sense but have you looked at any of the Paradox titles? Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Hearts of Iron IV and Stellaris. None of them very demanding on graphics. CK2 and EU4 have lots of DLC (not all of which is needed in anyway I hasten to add) but most of it is 75% off in any steam sale should you get into it.

Company of hero's would also probably be fine on modern integrated graphics like that- it's a ten year old game! Even things like Cities Skylines would also run I bet and you wouldn't need 60fps!

Also I'd suggest Anno 1404 ( haven't played more recent one set in the future)

I think you'll be surprised how capable the 520 is once set up, I've been running decent frames in Skyrim, Tomb Raider, Arma 3, Mass Effect series.

As for strategy, This War of Mine is a good buy

You like Tower Defense?

Defense Grid, Bloons TD5, Kingdom Rush and Sol Survivor are all very good TD games that will play on pretty much any modern machine.
