We are travelling from Newcastle to Andover, Hampshire tomorrow by car.

Setting off in the morning…looking for a place to stop for the night to have a nice meal and a comfortable stay over half way through the total journey

Any recommendations? £300 budget for stay and dinner for two.

Thanks.

If it were me, I'd just stop at one of the motorway service hotels. Cheap, relatively comfortable and you know what you're getting.

Would love somewhere out of a city/town if possible (for the place to stay)…I like the idea of a sleepy village.

I definitely do not want to stay in a service station. Perhaps I’m a snob, but the idea is to have a nice time. We did the whole journey in one on the way up, definitely capable of doing it on the way back too…I’ll raise the budget to £400 in case that was the problem.

Google maps suggests it’s only about a 5hr journey in total. If you are leaving in the morning why would you need an overnight stop?

Oxford is a good shout as its directly on route.

If you're looking for something more villagy you could make a detour into the Cotswolds - Stow on the Wold, Chipping Norton and Bourton on the Water are all nice.

Stratford upon Avon is another option.

You've got a decent budget so personally I'd be looking at the Michelin Guide to find a nice restaurant that also has rooms.

Some nice places in Melton Mowbray, or Market Harborough if you take the A1/A46/M1 route, only adds a few miles on really if you chose either one. Some interesting things to do in both places so you could make a day of it if you leave early enough.

https://www.hammerandpincers.co.uk/ is a nice place to stay, and has a good restaurant.

Stratford, Warwick or Leamington would be my pick. Not far out the way and absolutely delightful. Good places to eat and stay in all three.

There’s always Birmingham of course…!
