Hi - I have 1k to spend via a cycle to work scheme and would like to purchase a road bike.

It's rarely going to be used for commuting but will rack up some miles on it. I'd like to add I have never ridden a road bike. I know little about them, but am quite active my MTB. I have been told they are very different beasts.

If you had 1k to spend what you recommend?

If you've never ridden one, definitely get down to your local store and find one thats comfy and make sure you get the right size

Once you know a bit more about what you want having seen them in person it'll be more useful to advise on bikes

I've just bought a cyclocross bike (similar to a road bike but can take fatter tyres) for my commute. They might be worth a look if the roads near you aren't up to much.

Depends if it's a Halfords only voucher or if its a voucher you can use at a local shop i.e Cyclescheme.

Have a look at the big brands such as Giant, Specialized, Felt and other brands you see in the tour. Probably looking to get a decent alloy frame, carbon fork with a tapered steerer and Shimano 105 gearing. At a grand there won't be that much between brands so try to find one that you like the look off and fits you well.

If it's Halfords only get the Boardman Road Team.

Otherwise there's loads of choice at that money and as Jonny says go for 105 imo if at all possible.

Having said that my dad's new BMC has got 10 speed Tiagra and it seems decent to me.

Aye 10 speed tiagra is nice but I'd try get 105. The Forme longcliffe 1.0 has alloy frame, carbon fork,105, open pro rims and clearance for mudguards at £1k. Purely since I was looking at it at a show today. Seemed to get a good review in one of the magazines.
