I have been using an old western digital live tv box for the past 7 or so years and its been fine but its mighty slow with netflix and its using a rather old netflix version. I use it to play video files that i store on my NAS and then also use it to watch netflix/bbc iplayer. Basically i just need a box with a remote control that can stream video/music from my NAS and also have the latest netflix app with enough power to not feel sluggish.

I want to keep cost to a minimum as i really dont have much to spare, does anyone have a recommendation, is there such a box like the old WD Live TV but more up to date?

Cheers!

Wait that will stream video files from a NAS? like mkv files? I cant find any information on that at all. Maybe im searching the wrong terms.....

I think I used MX player on it, which worked streaming decent sized mkvs from a NAS
Sideload kodi on it for a streamlined interface

Roku utilising DLNA for your cheapest option, otherwise if you can spare a bit more and will probably last you a good X amount of years, go for the Nvidia shield.

Nvidia shield probably the gold standard, I've got the pro and it's flawless. Runs Plex server as well.

If you can stretch to a used or new Apple TV 4K you would struggle to be disappointed. Of all the media streaming devices I’ve used, inc built in so called smart tv’s, none do it better.

Apps load rapid and navigation is very quick and easy with the slick remote, voice commands make text input for searching easy too
