Recommendations for a modem/router

Looking to get a new router to replace our TalkTalk router. I was about to purchase the TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 then remembered that currently the phone line goes directly into the router and I won't be able to do this without purchasing a modem (correct me if I'm wrong). So I believe I need to purchase a ADSL modem/router because of this.

Are there any recommendations out there between £100-£150, looking for a good QoS and functionality to potentially add a VPN etc to it in future. We stream a lot of 4k content from the usual and Plex server.

I've somewhat narrowed it down to a Netgear D7000-200UKS if there's any feedback on this?

Thanks

Why not start by telling us what connection you have now? Talk talk don’t just do FTTC anymore. If it is FTTC, an ex OpenReach modem is cheap, solid and reliable (minor PSU issues, but it’s rare at worst), that let’s you use a much wider range of routers. But before we get to that stage how about telling us what it is about the existing router that isn’t working for you or what specifically you want from a new router that you can’t do now? You mention QoS, what specifically is the issue as it’s not a magic bullet and you only control your own network. VPN on a home ARM/MIPS router is both a bad idea and will be slow as hell if you have a fast connection. Is the Plex server local or remote? Streaming via VPN can make that less than fun.

We have faster fibre FTTC at the moment at 38mbs but looking to increase this to superfast fibre at 67 in the coming months. Thanks for the tip on the modem, found some reasonably priced ones.

Currently, when she's watching netflix in 4k and I'm gaming there is a some lag spikes more often then not. My plex server is remote through google drive and rclone, and they are all 4k HDR movies. Some wifi dead zones in the flat we're currently in, but we will be moving to a house by the end of the year so I guess I'm looking to future proof to some extent for when we do. Scrap the VPN idea then, thanks for that.
