Hello

Been having problems with my wireless with signal so i spoke to a network boffin and he told me to download a app called Wifi Analyzer for my phone.

Turns out there are that many wireless routers on my street its interfering with mine.

So a few questions if someone doesn't mind answering for me.

1 will a powerful router do the trick.

2 will home plugs be better if the signal goes from down stairs to up stairs . But also i need wireless for my phone.

The app Wifi Analyzer is saying im better off on channel 6 so ill try that before spending money but can i change the channel without my computer being wired to the router. My computer is heavy and will be a big job moving it and no laptop

thanks for the help in advanced

Yes you can get to the same web prompt from wireless, and it should only apply the change when you click save so if it kicks you off it shouldn't matter, the job should already be done.
be aware that the channel is the central point of the frequency spread, it stretches a few channels wide either side of that so just because 6 is empty doesn't mean 7,8,5,4 won't still interfere.

You CAN use sheer brute force of signal to overcome competing signals over shorter ranges, but bear in mind communication is TWO WAY so you'd have to beef up the signal from the router AND the phone, which is somewhat harder to do.

this program says im on channel 3 but like you say it spreads from 1-5 it also shows that there are 4 or 5 inside my channel spread.

Ill try take a screen shot and upload it and try a channel change shortly. Finished work early because of the weather

sorry there a bit big lol there were more networks on my channel this morning and last night as well

i can get into my router but i cant find were to change the channel

will it change back every time i turn it off then back on at night or when i go work?

ok watched a vid on youtube on how to change it. but when i change it it stays on channel 3 for some reason. when i save the setting it does reset the router and reconnects on channel 3

Go set up then wireless then change the channel and click apply.

I would recomend you put some security (WPA2 AES Preferably) on your wireless otherwise everyone will be able to use your internet.

ive press apply (save settings on this one) and it goes back to the same channel.

but now i cant even get onto the router settings

used window diagnostics and it says "the DNS server is not responding"

ok reset the router with the little reset button on the back so i can now get on the net and TRY change router settings

Turn the router on and off, you should hit save and it will probably reboot to apply the new channel.

If its' messing about, connect to it from a PC wired into it, this would be safer.

Looking at that wifi analyzer output channel 7 seems to have the clearest airspace.

had to wire it up. channel 6 seems to be ok. but ill try 7 see what thats like. it also has a dbm meter and goes up as i get a better signal and beeps like a metal detector its quite funny. the wife thinks im a nob walking round the house with it lol

I have that app. it's quite useful. I use it for testing wifi coverage in roaming setups.

If you think that's funky, get inSSIDer for your PC/laptop (or root hacked android phone), and hook your phone's GPS into it :) It'll not only show you the surrounding Wifi networks, it'll also give you the GPS co-ordinates of the APs :)
How the hell it figures that out without an SNMP query I don't know but it's quite a cool party trick guessing where which network belongs to which neighbour :)

well tried 7 and the app says 6 is better so ill stick with that i think.

thanks a lot for your help guys.

this app is great

next mission is figuring out how to root my phone been looking into it for days and i still cant figure it out.

been on the forums but the guides are puzzling me.

ive got the 3 button mode working on my Samsung galaxy s because its one that does no work from new so i had to flash it

but after that im clueless

Are you on a BT connection?

If so, phone them up and get them to disable the Openfon and Openzone. These will constantly transmit on whatever channel you change your own Wifi to and will cause you no end of hassle.

My bro-in-law had this issue and I had to explain that their very nice plan for getting other people to use your router as an access point was causing issues with the wifi in the house. They turned it of, quick re-boot of the router and it had gone and so had all the drop outs and really carp wifi connections..............

May take a while to get put through to the correct department, but stick with it and insist that they disable it.

Is very cheely of BT to put that in by default. Not many people will know it is there and will have snags with it.

Im on virgin media mate.

But sky do sly things with there internet.

I was on 16 mb at the time as that's all they did.

So i checked speedtest.net like us people do and turns out i was getting 6mb i phoned them and they said they start you off on 8mb then put it up if you have faults or slow connection. How bad is that. So for the people who just surf the net will not have problems and have no need to complain and get ripped off.

Took me months of email before they would drop my package without charging me for dropping it before the 12months were up.

Ill never use sky again
