I don't play many games, but fancy getting a new one.

I would like to get another strategy game, but I tend to prefer the ones without a degree level learning curve, or ones not based mainly around conflict.

To give you some examples of things I have loved in the past -

Sim City
Settlers II - Anniversary Edition
Rollercoaster Tycoon.

I have looked at the latest Settlers (6), but the reviews are not inspiring.

Can anyone recommend me a game they think I will like. Specs of my machine are not cutting edge but they ran Crysis to a playable level (got bored of that after a week or so!), but on the flip side if there is something old but gold that I have missed then that is fine

Thanks in advance!

I heard there is some game out called Red Alert 3, strategy based.

Don't know if its any good though ;)

RA3 is not good strategy...

The most strategy intensive game I've played is Supreme Commander, fantastic. Building your base is particularly fun, I know you dont prefer military but sup com is like sim city with nukes sometimes.

Actually you might consider looking back in time for a good corporate strategy game, try Transport Tycoon (Open transport tycoon). no nukes this time.

looking at the types you have loved I would say
Rise of nations (the first one) old so should be cheap now Rise Of Nations: Gold Edition =£5-99
Civilization 4

Is Civ IV pretty easy to pick up and play?

It depends, I got into it in 30 mins, but I had played the previous games...
Some find it too hard to pick up.

Can I recommend Openttd, it's an open source version of transport tycoon, the predecessor of RCT...

Then theres:
Sim City 4 deluxe: Best SC to date, especially with mods like NAM.
Civ IV : Colonization ( it's not an actual civilization game, it's a remake of colonization, much less military based than Civ, but more trade based...)
Anno series, trading & city building/trading game
Supreme commander: Strategic medium paced warfare
Company of heroes: Very tactical RTS, non rts players love this usually...
Rise of nations: warfare but quite fun too, it's not just fighting...
Worms Armageddon : Great turn based game. Especially online, still active.
Total war series: the campaign is a conflict, but still, you can auto resolve battles and just concentrate on the cities & making the units.
Settles III and IV, imo IV is the best settlers game, but most swear by settlers 3.
Pharaoh & Caesar 3: Both very similar city building games, very little warfare ( attackers only and only in some scenario's, most games are peaceful ones) one based in ancient Rome one in ancient Egypt, imo pharaoh is better and more refined but both are superb, 9/10 game imo...
Port royale 2: Trading game in the Caribbean: Made by a small German dev hence not really known but it's provided me with at least 25 hours of very good gameplay.

There are more good games but atm they just don't come to mind...

Roller coaster tycoon 3 ?

Pharaoh is a BRILLIANT game.
Have had it since it came out all those years ago, and its still a favorite.
