As per thread title, I'm going to format and have lots of HD space on my EXT HD. Now I'd like to make a copy of image of XP with all drivers and my preference settings pre-installed. So in the future if I were to format it won't be as much hassle restoring everything.

Cheers :)

Could use the windows functionality called "slipstreaming" although i dont know a huge amount about it, basically you can just add all your drivers, all patches and programs etc..

/edit http://www.nliteos.com/ is a handy tool for this kinda of thing :)

That's nlite. I have a copy of that . . but it still requires a format with pre-installed stuff.

From my understanding a ghost image can be restored and it's pretty much the state it was left in kind of thing.

Well yea, you could use norton ghost to create a ghost image after you format/install all programs and updates then take the image and then just use that when you want to reinstall.

From memory ghost only takes about 20mins to re-hash a drive as well

As far as I've found, you need to have a running OS for Acronis - Ghost you can run from a floppy / bootable USB / cd, whatever.

EDIT: Although - Acronis is also very good :D
