just ordered this...

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving** £328.32 1 £328.32

Need recommendations for cpu cooler....

Aiming for a decent overclock? Budget? Case? Size restrictions?

I would always go air to be honest, something like a Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Thermalright Silver Arrow, Noctua D14/15, Dark Rock Pro 3 etc...

Well for AIO Coolers popular choice seems to be the Corsair H100i (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-015-CS&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2342)

Having the "K" version of the CPU I assume you are wanting to Overclock this is where the H100i is more than capable.

In my opinion a great bonus of the AIO over Air is they look beautiful if your case is on show like mine, two the heat gets removed from the case rather than recirculated.

Also came in handy when transporting my case as some of the large air coolers would perhaps need to be removed due to risk of damaging the mobo.

Noctua D14 @ £55 it's the best value (comes with the best fans) and still up there with the very best.

All in one water coolers can have problems, I am forever seeing posts about people complaining about pump noises or having issues and having to return them.

Stick to air you can have 2 fans at 500 rpm each on these big air coolers and still get great temps.

This - if it will fit your case / RAM. I believe the D15 has been re-profiled to be more compatible with taller RAM.

Quoted for truth - AIO coolers will eventually fail, its a case of when not if, air coolers are much less of a worry as the only moving parts are the fans which isn't an issue if you have 2 fitted and some can function adequately with no fans at all as long as you have decent airflow through the case.

As good if not better temperatures than many AIO's and much quieter.

Ok so this is what I've ordered, I've also got a enthoo pro tower case.

Just need the cpu cooler now, still not sure what to get...

NH-D14 is a very good cooler. Only drawback is it's fans are not PWM. It if had the same fans the NH-D15 has, my guess it would cool just as well. ;)

Less money than AIOs, much quieter, cools better at same noise levels and will last almost forever.

Doyll, is the phanteks heatsink any good? Liking the red one, would match my black and red setup...

The Phanteks PH-TC14 ? yea it's as good as any big air cooler they all a few c within eachother, I just think the noctua is the best for the cost/performance as the phantek is like £20 more.

Yeah after all reviews and recommendations the noctua is obviously the best, but it's kind of brown and beige.....

yea the fans are beige with bergundy fins not great looking but you can change fans down the road I user 2 x thermalright ty-140's on mine but you can nab a d14 for £54 it's the best value but if you have money to burn get what you like at the end of the day

btw are you sure that power supply is good enough ? If I were spending as much as you I'd be looking at a better psu

Some of the best coolers are PH-TC14PE, R1 Ultimate, Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme (because of TY-143 2500rpm fans), NH-D15 (because of NF-A15 1500rpm fans) .. but there are so many others so close or as good it is impossible to pick the best. For example, the TRUE Spirit 140 Power is 2c cooler than NH-D14 with same fans .. NH-D14 is 0.7c cooler than NH-D15 when both are using 2x NF-A14 Flex fans. The NH-D14 with a couple of TY-143 fans is a beast. Very quiet below 1200rpm but when pushed to the max rpm of 2500rpm it becomes a screaming beast, but also 6c cooler than at 1200rpm .. while TRUE Spirit 140 Power is another 3c cooler.

When we are dealing in 1-3c difference, with the unresolved variable in most cooler testing being room temp rather than the actual temperature of air going into cooler cooler, most tests have little value. Most testing is done using room ambient, not the actual temperature of air going into cooler .. and room temp (especially if testing is done in a case) is not the same. Cooler intake is usually 2-14c degrees warmer .. even on an open bench test station it can vary by several degrees.

But I digress. To answer your question, the TC14PE is a very good cooler. For seven quid each you can get TY-143 fans to put on it and it will cool even better and look like this
