Hi all,

Anyone have any recommendations on sealing or waxing whichever is best to keep oak it's natural as possible look, I have 2 large slabs of 40mm thick oak of which I've made into floating shelves for my iMac etc to sit on in an alcove. The oak is pre-sanded, I just want to keep it as untouched in it's appearance as possible rather than stain the oak.

Any ideas please? Products to use etc.

Ta :)

Osmo oil do a "raw matt" oil which gives good protection without changing the colour much and without that shiny finish. Whatever you use is likely to change the colour a bit. Just make sure that the wood is really clean first, I normally wipe down with some white spirit then let it dry before using any finishes.

Accept that anything you put on the wood is going to change the colour to some degree.

We treated almost all of the oak in our house (doors, floors, skirting, architrave) with Bona Hard Wax (Matt) and really like the finish.

You could also look at Briwax.

Ideally, you'd want to have an offcut or something you could test the products on.

@Grasshopper, I'll have a look at that Osmo "raw matt". I've used Osmo before but wasn't too sure of the finish on oak. @irish tom, luckily I've got a few pieces of offcuts to try various ones on, just choices of which brands to try now without the costs I can whittle it down now.
